Jerusalem And End Time Prophecy | Jonathan Cahn Sermon
Jerusalem And End Time Prophecy | Jonathan Cahn Sermon
The Jewish people have long prayed for the coming of the Messiah. According to biblical prophecy, the Messiah will return to save His people at a time when Israel faces great and need. As foretold, they would fall by the sword and be taken captive among the nations, and Jerusalem would be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles until the appointed time of the nations is fulfilled
In modern history, events in the Middle East especially those surrounding Israel have drawn global attention and aligned with ancient biblical prophecy. Central to these prophecies is the restoration of Jerusalem. Without Jerusalem, the fulfillment of end-time prophecy cannot occur. The city stands at the heart of God’s plan, as emphasized throughout Scripture. Psalm 87 declares that the Lord loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob, and Psalm 132 affirms that God has chosen Zion Jerusalem as His eternal dwelling place.
Jerusalem is not only a historical city but a spiritual . It is where salvation history unfolded: the crucifixion, resurrection, and outpouring of the Holy Spirit all took place there. For believers, even if they encountered faith elsewhere, their salvation is spiritually rooted in Jerusalem. The city is mentioned over 800 times in the Bible, making it the most referenced city in Scripture and a central focus of both Old and New Testament prophecy.
Jesus prophesied the destruction of Jerusalem and the scattering of the Jewish people, which occurred in 70 AD when the Roman Empire destroyed the city and dispersed its inhabitants. For nearly 2,000 years, Jerusalem remained under foreign ruled by successive empires. However, in a pivotal moment of modern history June 7, 1967 Jerusalem came back under Jewish control during the Six-Day War, marking a significant milestone in prophetic fulfillment.
Yet, prophecy also indicates that Jerusalem will face future turmoil. According to the Book of Daniel and Revelation, a figure known as the Antichrist will arise, make a covenant, and later desecrate a rebuilt temple in Jerusalem. This period, often referred to as the Tribulation, will last seven years, with a critical midpoint at three and a half years when the temple sacrifices will cease.
Jerusalem remains the epicenter of end-time prophecy. Key events including the of two witnesses, global conflict, and spiritual confrontation are all tied to this city. The Temple Mount, in particular, is a focal point of spiritual warfare, as it is believed to be the future site of the Messiah’s reign.
The prophet Zechariah foretold that in the last days, Jerusalem would become a “cup of trembling” and a “burdensome stone” for all nations. The world would gather against it, attempting to control or divide it, yet those who do so would face consequences. Today, international tension surrounding Jerusalem reflects this prophecy, as global powers debate its status and sovereignty.
Despite opposition, Scripture promises that the Jewish people will return to Jerusalem and ultimately recognize their Messiah. Zechariah 12:10 declares that God will pour out a spirit of grace, and the people will look upon the One they have pierced and mourn deeply, signifying a profound of heart and national repentance.
The return of the Jewish people to Israel and Jerusalem in modern times has also coincided with a renewed spiritual awakening, including the rise of Messianic Jewish believers. This aligns with the Apostle Paul’s teaching in Romans 11, which speaks of a partial hardening of Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles is complete after which all Israel will be saved.
In the final chapters of prophecy, all nations will gather against Jerusalem in a climactic battle. At that moment, God Himself will intervene. According to Zechariah 14, the Lord will stand on the Mount of Olives, and the Messiah will return in power and glory to establish His kingdom. From Jerusalem, He will reign over all the earth.
Jerusalem is not just a city it is the prophetic center of God’s redemptive plan. Its past, present, and future are intricately tied to the unfolding of biblical prophecy. As Scripture reveals, what happens in Jerusalem ultimately impacts the entire world. And in the end, it will be from this holy city that peace, restoration, and the reign of the Messiah will be established forever.
