Praying in the Spirit: The Missing Key to Walking in God’s Power and Possessing His Promises

The Bible places great emphasis on praying in tongues and praying in the Spirit. Jesus spoke about it, and the Apostle Paul devoted significant attention to it in his teachings. Yet today, many believers overlook this powerful spiritual gift. It is as though the enemy is working to remove a vital ingredient from the life of the Church.

Through years of studying Scripture, I have discovered something remarkable: when I pray in the Spirit, the Word of God comes alive. Verses I may have read many times suddenly open up with fresh understanding. Hidden truths become clear. Keys that unlock entire passages of Scripture begin to emerge.

When you pray thousands of words in tongues, it may take only a few words of understanding for God’s power to be released into a situation. Your spirit, empowered by the Holy Spirit, often perceives things long before your natural mind does. Learn to listen to what God is revealing in your spirit, and you will begin to experience His wisdom, guidance, and blessing in every area of life.

God’s Daily Guidance for Your Life

One of the most beautiful pictures in Scripture is how God led the children of Israel through the wilderness. By day, He guided them with a pillar of cloud. By night, He led them with a pillar of fire. This demonstrates God’s desire to personally guide His people every day.

The Lord still desires to lead His children today.

Imagine beginning each morning with a word of encouragement from God’s Word, spending time in prayer and worship, and ending each evening with peaceful meditation on Scripture. Living in this rhythm helps keep your heart connected to the Lord and sensitive to His leading throughout the day.

Walking in the Spirit and Possessing Your Inheritance

As we continue studying the theme, There Remains Much Land to Be Possessed, we return to God’s words to Joshua.

When Joshua had grown old, God declared:

You are old and advanced in years, and there remains very much land yet to be possessed.

This statement carries a powerful lesson for believers today. No matter how much we have already received from God, there is still more to experience of His grace, His promises, and His provision.

In Joshua 1, God said:

Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you.

Notice the tense. God did not say, I will give it to you.He said, I have given it to you.

The inheritance was already theirs. Their responsibility was to step into what God had already provided.

The same principle applies under the New Covenant. Through Christ’s finished work, God has already supplied everything we need. Our task is not to earn His blessings but to walk by faith and receive what He has already accomplished.

A Hidden Picture of the Cross in the Promised Land

As I studied the geographical boundaries God gave to Israel, I became convinced that every detail in Scripture serves a divine purpose.

God described the land extending:

  • From the wilderness to Lebanon
  • From the Euphrates River to the Great Sea the Mediterranean

When these boundaries are viewed geographically, they form the shape of a cross.

What a beautiful picture!

Even in the Old Testament, God was pointing forward to the cross of Jesus Christ.

Today, our inheritance is found in the cross. Every blessing, every promise, every provision flows from what Jesus accomplished there.

The Cross Provides More Than Forgiveness

Many Christians understand that the cross provides forgiveness of sins and eternal life. While that is gloriously true, there is much more included in Christ’s finished work.

There is still much land to be possessed.

Last week we explored how healing is part of Christ’s redemption. Yet many believers approach healing as though it depends solely on whether God feels inclined to grant it.

They plead and beg, hoping God may choose to heal them.

But healing is not founded upon wishful thinking. It is founded upon the finished work of Jesus.

Isaiah declared:

Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows.

The Hebrew word translated surely is a strong affirmation. It is as though the Holy Spirit anticipated future doubts about healing and intentionally emphasized this truth.

Jesus not only bore our sins He also bore our sicknesses and pains.

Because of the cross, believers can approach healing with confidence, standing on the solid foundation of Christ’s completed work.

Jesus Redeemed Us From Stress, Fear, and Anxiety

The cross addresses more than physical healing.

Consider the Garden of Gethsemane.

After Adam sinned, God declared:

By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread.

Sweat became associated with painful toil, stress, and the burdens of a fallen world.

Yet in another garden, Jesus sweat drops of blood.

As He carried our curse, our worries, our anxieties, and our burdens, His blood touched the ground that had been cursed since Adam’s fall.

Through His sacrifice, Christ redeemed us from the curse of painful striving and anxious living.

Because of Him, we can receive God’s supernatural peace a peace that guards our hearts and minds against fear, worry, and stress.

A Call to Pray in the Spirit Daily

While preparing this message, I sensed the Lord urging believers to make praying in the Spirit a daily practice.

Set aside time each day whether thirty minutes or an hour to pray in tongues and allow the Holy Spirit to intercede through you.

This is not about legalism. It is about partnership with God.

Simply come before Him and say:

Lord, let Your Spirit pray through me.

Then begin praying in the Spirit.

There is tremendous power in this practice.

The Holy Spirit Raises a Standard Against the Enemy

Isaiah 59 contains an extraordinary promise:

When the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him.

God then reveals what this covenant standard is:

My Spirit who is upon you, and My words which I have put in your mouth, shall not depart from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your descendants, nor from the mouth of your descendants’ descendants.

Notice the connection.

God places His Spirit upon His people and His words in their mouths.

This is New Covenant language.

The Holy Spirit empowers believers to speak supernatural words inspired by God Himself.

When the Day of Pentecost arrived, the Holy Spirit filled the disciples, and immediately their mouths were filled with spiritual utterance. They began speaking in tongues as the Spirit gave them expression.

This is not accidental.

God attached great significance to Spirit-inspired speech.

Praying in Tongues Unlocks Divine Mysteries

Paul taught:

He who speaks in a tongue speaks mysteries.

In the New Testament, a mystery is not something hidden forever. Rather, it is a truth once concealed but now revealed through Christ.

Paul received extraordinary revelation concerning:

  • Christ and the Church
  • Marriage
  • God’s redemptive plan
  • The mystery of godliness
  • The mystery of iniquity

How did he gain such insight?

Part of the answer lies in his commitment to praying in the Spirit.

As believers pray in tongues, the Holy Spirit illuminates Scripture and unveils spiritual understanding.

This is why many Christians discover that after extended seasons of praying in the Spirit, the Bible suddenly becomes more alive, more powerful, and more understandable than ever before.
