David Diga Hernandez: Don’t Confuse Your Thoughts for God’s Voice
Learning to Hear God’s Voice Above Your Own
Have you ever been certain that God was speaking, only to realize later that it might have just been your own thoughts? That’s where confusion begins—when your emotions and imagination blur the line between your voice and God’s. But the truth is, God does speak to His children, and learning to recognize His voice isn’t about mastering a skill—it’s about sharpening a spiritual sense.
When you were born again, you were born into a new reality. You received spiritual eyes, ears, and a heart capable of hearing the Holy Spirit. Hearing His voice isn’t a privilege for the few—it’s your birthright as a child of God. The problem is that many believers approach this gift with anxiety or guilt, constantly fearing they’ll miss God’s will. That’s what David Diga Hernandez calls religious OCD—living in fear of doing something wrong instead of resting in God’s love and peace.
The Lord doesn’t want you to strive; He wants you to trust. He knows how to reach you. When you begin from a place of peace rather than panic, His voice becomes clearer.
God’s voice is steady, while your emotions and thoughts often shift. The Bible says, “The grass withers and the flowers fade, but the word of our God stands forever” (Isaiah 40:8). His voice brings clarity and consistency. Your feelings, on the other hand, can pull you in different directions—one day convinced, the next uncertain. But the Holy Spirit speaks with a quiet, steady firmness that doesn’t waver with mood or circumstance.
Another difference: God leads, but your thoughts push. His Spirit guides you beside still waters, not through fear or pressure. While He may speak with urgency at times—for example, a warning that saves your life—His voice is never chaotic or manipulative. He guides with confidence, patience, and love.
Most importantly, God’s voice always aligns with His Word. He will never tell you to do anything that contradicts Scripture. If a thought encourages sin, compromise, or self-justification, it’s not from Him. God’s Spirit never excuses disobedience. He leads you toward holiness, not away from it.
His voice also speaks from peace, not fear. That doesn’t mean His words will always feel comfortable—conviction, correction, or warning can feel heavy—but even in those moments, there is a deep, unshakable peace beneath it. That peace comes from trust in His character and the assurance that He is with you, even when His direction challenges you.
Finally, the voice of God affirms who you are. Your thoughts may question your worth, whispering that you’ve failed too many times or that God has turned away. But the Holy Spirit continually reminds you, “You are a child of God.” He calls you to cry out, “Abba, Father,” assuring you that you are not forgotten, not rejected, not disqualified. Even after mistakes, He draws you back—not with shame, but with love.
If you’ve ever felt that God is silent or far away, remember: His voice hasn’t left you. He’s teaching you to listen differently—to rest, to trust, and to recognize that His voice is consistent, peaceful, and anchored in His Word.
So quiet the noise of your thoughts. Lay down the fear of missing Him. Listen—not with anxiety, but with faith. For the same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead lives within you, and He is still speaking.
