Jack Hibbs : When Christians Fail to Vote

Hello, church family! Today, we have a challenging question to discuss, and we’ll move quickly as I have a lot of notes to cover. Don’t worry; if you download them later, you’ll see they aren’t as overwhelming as they seem right now. This message is timely, especially with the upcoming election in just three weeks. Many of you may not know that our church has been addressing these issues for 34 years, and some newcomers might be surprised by our focus today.

Recently, I’ve received comments about a perceived shift in my tone regarding politics. The truth is, it’s that time of year again, and our focus must reflect that. Today’s message is titled “When Christians Fail to Vote.” This title speaks volumes about the current state of our nation and the growing trend we’ve seen in America.

Let’s begin by standing together to read a series of scriptures. I’ve compiled several biblical verses that highlight our responsibility as believers. I’ll start with verse one, and I encourage you to read the following verses loudly enough for everyone to hear, including those in Washington, D.C., and Sacramento.

“Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore, hear a word from my mouth and give them warning from me.” (Ezekiel 3:17)
“When I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die,’ and you give him no warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way to save his life, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but I will require his blood at your hand.” (Ezekiel 3:18)
“Yet if you warn the wicked and he does not turn from his wickedness, he shall die in his iniquity, but you have delivered your soul.” (Ezekiel 3:19)

“And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15)
“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds.” (2 Corinthians 10:4)
“Bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:5)

As we explore the topic of Christians failing to vote, I want to share a powerful quote from George Washington: “It is impossible to govern the world without God. It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and to humbly implore His protection and favor.”

Today, we gather in a church that emphasizes the importance of our faith in relation to our civic duties. Yes, our nation is facing challenges, and while it may seem on the brink of disaster, we must remember that we still live in one of the greatest countries the world has ever seen—a nation that God has used to bless others and provide refuge for many.

As we approach the upcoming election, I want to commend those of you who came in today carrying your ballots. This church serves as a ballot collection site, ensuring that your voices are heard. Your votes matter, and they will be securely sent to the county registrar’s office tomorrow, under armed guard, without any interference.

Let’s be diligent and committed to our responsibilities as citizens and as Christians. Your vote is your voice, and it’s time to make it heard!
