Unpacking the New Creation
The words of Paul in 2 Corinthians 5:17 speak with a timeless clarity: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation: old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” For many believers, including myself, these words are more than just a hopeful promise they lay the very bedrock of our identity in Christ. But how can we fully embrace the reality that everything has become new when, on the outside, so much seems unchanged? This tension leads us to an even deeper revelation of God’s design.
The Three-Part Design: Spirit, Soul, and Body
The Bible reveals that we are made up of three distinct parts: spirit, soul, and body (1 Thessalonians 5:23). Most of us are quite aware of our physical bodies what we see, feel, and experience. We also recognize our soul, which encompasses our mind, will, and emotions the part of us that feels joy, sadness, confidence, or insecurity. But often overlooked is the spirit, the innermost part of our being.
This spirit is where the miracle of new birth takes place. When you place your faith in Jesus, it’s not your body or your emotions that are instantly made perfect. Instead, your spirit is completely made new. You don’t become a “baby Christian” in your spirit, needing to grow into maturity there. The Bible teaches that the moment you are born again, your spirit is instantly and perfectly recreated in the image of Christ Himself (Ephesians 4:24, 1 John 4:17).
What Changes When You’re Born Again?
Understanding that your spirit is transformed is key. Many people try to see spiritual change in their feelings or their actions first. You look at your body and see all the same features. You check your emotions and sometimes still feel fear or doubt. But spiritual reality goes beyond what you can touch or sense it’s a miracle at the core of your being. In your spirit, the old has truly gone, and the new has come.
Learning the Difference Between Spirit and Soul
Many wonder why they don’t immediately feel different when they’re saved. The reason is that the change happened in your spirit, and not in your emotions or intellect. For a long time, I used the terms “soul” and “spirit” as if they were the same thing. But Scripture makes a distinction. Your soul your mind, will, and emotions can change over time as you renew your mind (Romans 12:2). But your spirit is instantly made perfect when you trust in Christ. That spirit is now joined with the Lord’s Spirit, becoming one (1 Corinthians 6:17).
Your Identity: As Jesus Is So Are You!
The Bible says, “As He is, so are we in this world” (1 John 4:17). Not ‘as He will be’ or ‘as we will be someday in eternity.’ Right now, in your spirit, you are as Jesus is. This astonishing truth isn’t always visible to us in our daily battles or when we look in the mirror. Yet, it is the firm foundation of our faith and confidence. Through Christ, we are righteous, holy, and filled with God’s Spirit (2 Corinthians 5:21; Galatians 4:6).
Renewing Your Mind: The Path to Transformation
If the transformation is already complete in your spirit, then where does spiritual growth happen? The Christian journey is a process of renewing your mind to align with what is true in your spirit (Romans 12:2). It’s not about performing to earn God’s approval it’s about realizing who you already are in Christ and letting that truth influence your thoughts, choices, and actions. As you meditate on the Word and learn to see yourself through God’s eyes, your soul begins to line up with your spirit, and your life is transformed.
A Miraculous Power Within
The same power that raised Jesus from the dead now lives within you (Ephesians 1:19-20). This is not a metaphor or a future hope this is present-day reality for every believer. Jesus even said, “Whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these” (John 14:12). Healing the sick, casting out demons, and raising the dead aren’t commands given only to a select few, but are promises available to all who have received the new birth.
Learning to Live By Faith, Not Feelings
