When Nothing Makes Sense: Finding God’s Hand in Life’s Darkest Seasons
Understanding Night Seasons in the Christian Life
Life isn’t always bright and clear. Sometimes, you find yourself in a dark valley, confused or weighed down by sadness. If you’ve ever struggled to find meaning in a difficult season or wrestled to understand why things aren’t working out, you’re not alone. The Bible is full of stories about people who faced these “night seasons”—times when life seemed impossible and God felt distant. But there’s hope: even when nothing makes sense, God is still working.
Let’s explore how God meets us in our hardest moments and how He turns night into morning, darkness into light, and sorrow into joy.
Everyone Goes Through Dark Seasons
Maybe right now you’re facing depression, confusion, or sleepless nights. Maybe it feels like God isn’t answering your prayers, or that He’s hidden His face from you. If so, remember—you’re not the first to walk this path.
The Bible is filled with individuals who faced seasons of darkness. In Psalm 16, David said, “I will bless the Lord who has given me counsel; my heart also instructs me in the night seasons.” Life on earth is full of ups and downs; “night seasons” are inevitable for everyone. Even as believers, we’re not immune from trials, confusion, or spiritual warfare. While evil and darkness exist here, the book of Revelation promises there will be no more night in heaven—but for now, we wrestle with darkness on this side of eternity.
Recognizing the Source of Your Night Seasons
When you find yourself in a dark season, ask, “Why is this happening?” Sometimes the source is ourselves—mistakes, poor decisions, or simply being human. Other times, it’s the enemy, seeking to oppress us and rob us of our peace. We’re in a spiritual battle, and the devil loves to stir up anxiety, fear, and sorrow, especially at night when our defenses are down.
Yet, in all these times, God is not absent. He is “the person of joy” who comes with the morning (Psalm 30:5). Sorrow may last for the night, but joy comes with the dawn—and that joy is not a fleeting emotion; it’s the very presence of Jesus entering our situation.
Jesus Draws Near in the Night
The Lord often visits us in special ways during dark seasons. While God is always with us, there are unique moments when He draws near and invites us into deeper fellowship. Sometimes, you’ll sense a quiet yearning to open your Bible, to pray, to turn your attention away from distractions and towards Him. These are holy invitations—moments to learn from the “yoke” of Jesus, who promised that His yoke is easy and His burden is light (Matthew 11:29-30).
In ancient times, farmers would yoke a young, inexperienced ox with a strong, seasoned one. The younger animal simply had to follow the older’s lead—turn when he turns, rest when he rests, move when he moves. Jesus invites us to be “yoked” with Him: to respond when He draws us, to rest when He says rest, and to drink deeply of His presence when He offers renewal. If you ignore the invitation, you may miss out on refreshing that only He can give.
God Is Your Shield in the Darkest Moments
Consider the story of Abraham. After his victorious rescue of Lot, God spoke to him in a vision, saying, “Don’t be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward” (Genesis 15:1). This wasn’t just a front-facing shield like a Roman soldier’s, but a protection that surrounded him from all sides. Did Abraham have reason to be afraid after a great victory? Absolutely. Sometimes, after a mountaintop experience, fear of a counter-attack or new challenges can creep in.
But God’s answer is always, “Don’t be afraid.” At night, when fear and anxiety are loudest, picture yourself surrounded by God’s shield. He sees you. He knows your circumstances. When sleep escapes you and you toss and turn, remember—His protection is around you even in the literal or figurative midnight hours.
The Devil’s Roar Is Loudest at Night—But God’s Voice Is Louder
Nighttime can be the hardest. Worries seem greater, problems bigger, and the enemy’s accusations can feel overwhelming. Many parents know this all too well—when a child is sick, it’s always worst at night. But while the devil roars, God is right there, working to turn things around for your good. The accusations the enemy whispers in the dark cannot override the truth of God’s Word: you are His beloved, and He is for you.
Faith Shines Bright in the Darkness
Look at Daniel, who was thrown into the lion’s den at night for doing what was right. Even in the depths, God did not leave him. Scripture says Daniel was untouched because “he believed in his God.” The same was true for Abraham—he believed what God told him about his future descendants, even when he couldn’t see the outcome from the darkness he faced. Faith doesn’t always remove us from night seasons, but it anchors us in hope until the morning comes.
It is in these dark seasons that God often imparts wisdom and understanding. Solomon, renowned for his wisdom, received revelation from God in a dream, when he was asleep. David himself said, “You instruct me in the night seasons.” Many times, God speaks best when the world is quiet, when worry has worn us out, and we finally yield to listen.
