High Tech Idols And The Athenian Revelation | Jonathan Cahn Sermon
The Unknown God Revealed: From Human Searching to Divine Salvation
When the apostle Paul stood before the people of Athens, he made a bold declaration:
“What you worship without knowing, I now proclaim to you.”
The “unknown God” they acknowledged was not a mystery to remain hidden it was the God of Israel, Yahweh, the Most High, the Messiah. Paul revealed that the God they were searching for had already made Himself known.
The name Jesus (Yeshua) carries this truth:
“Yahweh is salvation.”
Only the God who is beyond this world can offer something greater than the world and only He can truly save it. Humanity cannot save itself, because we are not God. Instead, we are created by Him.
God Cannot Be Contained or Created
Paul explained a powerful truth:
God does not dwell in temples made by human hands.
Though He allowed His presence in places like Solomon’s temple, even that could not contain Him. God is greater than any structure, image, or system. He is not an idol, and He cannot be shaped or controlled by human effort.
This confronts a deep human tendency:
to create God in our own image.
When people create idols whether physical or modern they are ultimately centering everything around themselves. Today, idols may not look like statues, but they still exist whenever people create their own truth, their own version of God, or place themselves at the center of life.
From Self-Centered Faith to God-Centered Life
Even believers can fall into this trap.
When faith becomes focused only on personal effort “what I do,” “how well I perform” the focus shifts back to self. But true faith is not about producing works from ourselves.
The secret is this:
Not to become the creator of good works, but to become the work of God.
When God is truly at the center, life is no longer about self-effort, but about transformation by His power.
One Creator, One Humanity
Paul declared that from one man, God made all nations.
This reveals a foundational truth:
- Every human life has value
- Every person is created in God’s image
- All people are equal before Him
This truth stands against racism, division, and injustice. Every person carries intrinsic worth because they reflect their Creator.
The God-Shaped Void in Every Heart
God created humanity with a deep longing:
a space in the heart that only He can fill.
People may try to fill it with:
- Idols
- Success
- Philosophy
- Religion
- Technology
But nothing satisfies. Without God, humanity is like someone searching in the dark, reaching for something they cannot fully grasp.
Yet the hope is this:
God is not far from any of us.
No matter where you are, He is near ready to be found by those who seek Him with all their heart.
In Him We Live and Exist
Paul revealed a profound truth:
“In Him we live and move and have our being.”
Every breath, every moment of existence comes from God. Even those who do not yet know Him are sustained by Him.
But life only becomes complete when we recognize Him and invite Him into our lives.
From Reaching Up to Being Reached
All religions and philosophies share one common theme:
humanity trying to reach up to God.
But the gospel is completely different.
It is not about humanity reaching heaven
it is about heaven reaching down to humanity.
God Himself reaches out to us.
Modern Idols: The Rise of Self and Technology
Paul warned that when people turn away from God, they begin to serve the works of their own hands.
Today, this is more visible than ever.
Technology though not evil in itself can become an idol when it takes God’s place. People become consumed, controlled, and even shaped by what they create.
As machines become more “human-like,” there is a danger that humans become less truly human—losing connection, depth, and spiritual awareness.
The Unknown God Is No Longer Unknown
The altar in Athens represented something powerful:
humility the admission that there is something greater we do not yet understand.
God can work with that openness.
Paul used it as a doorway to reveal the truth:
The unknown God is not distant. He is real. He is near. And He has made Himself known in Jesus Christ.
Conclusion: Open Your Heart to the Greater Reality
If what you don’t know is greater than what you do know, then the only wise response is openness.
God is greater than human understanding, greater than culture, greater than anything we can create.
And He is reaching out to you.
Seek Him and you will find Him when you search with all your heart.
