Adrian Rogers: How Wonderful Is The Name Of Jesus
Adrian Rogers: How Wonderful Is The Name Of Jesus
Dr. Adrian Rogers’ Reflection on Matthew 1:21
“And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sins.” In this verse, we witness the profound truth that the name “Jesus” means “Jehovah Saves.” Through His name and mission, Jesus Christ fulfills the ultimate purpose of salvation for humanity. Can you say “Amen” to that?
Jesus is wonderful in every way—wonderful in His birth, life, miracles, teachings, death, resurrection, ascension, and, most of all, the promise of His glorious return.
Exploring the Wonder of Jesus
Dr. Rogers dives deeper into the majesty of Jesus, as highlighted in Isaiah 9:6:
“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder. And his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”
Three profound truths emerge about the wonderful name and nature of Jesus Christ:
1. His Supernatural Nature
Jesus is not just a man from Galilee—He is God in human flesh. Isaiah 9:6 calls Him “The Mighty God.” On that first Christmas morning, God sent a divine package to earth: Deity wrapped in humanity.
Consider John 1:1-3:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. All things were made by Him, and without Him was nothing made.”
This emphasizes that Jesus, the Word of God, existed before Bethlehem. He is eternal, uncreated, and fully God. As Dr. Rogers beautifully explains, “A word is an expression of an invisible thought. Jesus Christ is the visible expression of the invisible God.”
2. His Sovereign Nobility
Not only is Jesus fully divine, but He is also the King of kings. Isaiah 9:6 proclaims, “The government shall be upon His shoulder.” Verse 7 adds, “Of the increase of His government and peace, there shall be no end.”
Jesus’ reign is eternal and unmatched. His sovereign rule ensures everlasting peace, and His authority extends over all creation.
3. The Mystery of His Humanity
John Phillips, a renowned Bible teacher, captures the wonder of Jesus’ incarnation:
“The great mystery of the manger is that God should be able to translate deity into humanity without discarding the deity or distorting the humanity.”
Jesus was fully God and fully man. Not half-God and half-man, but the perfect God-man. This mystery underscores His ability to relate to humanity while embodying the fullness of God.
A Personal Encounter with the Lord
Dr. Rogers reminds us of the account in John 20:28, where Thomas, seeing the resurrected Christ, exclaimed, “My Lord and my God!” This confession confirms Jesus’ divine authority.
If Jesus were not truly Lord and God, He would not have accepted such worship. His life, death, and resurrection affirm His divine identity and provide the foundation for our faith.
A Call to Worship the Mighty God
As we reflect on Jesus’ supernatural nature, sovereign nobility, and the mystery of His humanity, let us marvel at the majesty of His name: Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Jesus Christ is the visible image of the invisible God, and through Him, we find salvation, peace, and eternal hope.
Can you say “Amen” to that?
