Despite coming to believe in Jesus as the Messiah intellectually, Jonathan wasn’t ready to fully surrender. He told his friends about Jesus, even leading some to the Lord, but held back from making a personal commitment, fearing it would mean giving up his passions and ambitions, including his teenage rock band.
Near-Death Encounters: Divine Intervention and a Deadline with God
Jonathan made a deal with God: “Give me a long life, and I’ll accept you on my deathbed.” But God had other plans. Twice, Jonathan narrowly escaped death—first in a car accident, then during a harrowing collision with a train, which miraculously left him without a scratch. Broken and aware of God’s sovereignty, Jonathan “renegotiated” his terms, promising to surrender his life to Christ on his twentieth birthday.
That day came, and alone on a mountaintop in the dark, Jonathan gave his life to Jesus. Coming from a Jewish family, Jonathan’s new-found faith in Jesus wasn’t easily accepted. Sharing Messianic prophecies with his parents, they immediately identified Jesus in the scriptures—only to recoil, hesitant to embrace the name that, for many Jews, represented centuries of persecution. While his parents struggled with the specifics of his faith, they couldn’t deny the positive change they witnessed in his life.
