Discovering Your Purpose: Overcoming Fear and Embracing God’s Calling
Every believer is called by God for a purpose. Yet, one of the greatest barriers between you and the fulfillment of that calling isn’t a lack of ability or opportunity it’s fear. We often assume that those we consider giants of faith are immune to moments of weakness. But the truth is, even the Apostle Paul, one of the most influential leaders in Christian history, admitted to feeling weak and afraid.
Let’s take a closer look at how Paul overcame discouragement, the role of divine encouragement, and how you can find the courage to embrace your unique calling, no matter what stands in your way.
Paul’s Struggles: Even the Bold Have Fears
Paul’s missionary journeys are marked by incredible courage, but also by real struggles. As he traveled to cities like Corinth a bustling, challenging metropolis with over 200,000 inhabitants Paul faced intense opposition. When he later wrote to the Corinthians, he openly confessed, “I was with you in weakness and in much trembling.” How remarkable is it that someone who stood boldly before crowds could still acknowledge his moments of fear?
This transparency is both comforting and instructive. Paul’s emotions fluctuated, just as ours do. Even those who do great things for God are not immune to discouragement. But here’s the key: God, who calls Himself the “God of all encouragement,” is constantly working to uplift His children.
An Encounter With Encouragement: Paul’s Vision
At a particularly vulnerable moment, God intervened in Paul’s life through a nighttime vision. The Lord spoke clearly: “Do not be afraid. Keep on speaking. Do not be silent, for I am with you and no one is going to attack and harm you, because I have many people in this city.”
God still speaks today sometimes through visions, sometimes through words, sometimes through timely encouragements from others. But every true word from God will both challenge and encourage you. Just as in Paul’s era, we are called to test and discern the authenticity of prophetic words, always holding fast to what is good and true.
Are Visions and Supernatural Encounters Still for Today?
God is not limited to the past. While not every believer has a spectacular vision, God empowers and encourages His people in countless ways. Occasionally, believers receive dreams, visions, or words of knowledge just when they need them most. But above all, God’s encouragement comes through His Word, which is living and active for every generation.
Be mindful that not every supernatural experience is from God; discernment is essential. Scripture reminds us: “Do not despise prophecies, but test everything; hold fast what is good.” Most importantly, every genuine encouragement from God will align with Scripture and lead to greater faith, love, and boldness.
Courage in the Face of Opposition
Paul wasn’t unique in his struggles with fear. The greatest biblical heroes, from Moses to Elijah, faced seasons of overwhelming emotion and intimidating circumstances. Moses, when called to confront Pharaoh, was afraid until God assured him, “I will be with you.” Elijah, after seeing miraculous deliverance, still experienced moments of depression and uncertainty.
What made the difference in each case? God’s presence and assurance. The constant throughout all of Scripture is God’s promise: “Fear not, for I am with you.” When you truly understand that God is with you Immanuel you’ll find confidence to move forward no matter what opposition you face.
The Promise of Divine Protection and Overflow
When God tells Paul, “I have many people in this city,” it reveals a comforting reality: God is always working behind the scenes. Even when we feel alone, there are believers, supporters, and even angels positioned to help accomplish God’s will. Oftentimes, we can’t see the extent of God’s provision and the resources at our disposal until we step forward in faith.
Paul’s story illustrates that while God never promised him a problem-free life, He did promise to be with him through every trial. Even when Paul was warned that he would experience suffering, he responded unflinchingly, recognizing that to live for Christ is to live with purpose and to face hardship with confidence and joy.
Faith Requires Action and Action Engages Faith
Are you sharing your faith? Are you fulfilling the assignment God has given uniquely to you? Many times, the greatest hindrance is not external opposition but the fear of what others will think. Fear of rejection, fear of failure, fear of not knowing what to say these are the common enemies of our purpose.
But God calls us to rise above those fears. In every generation, He says: “Speak and do not be silent. I am with you.” When you step out in obedience, you will discover that God’s presence is your unfailing assurance. You’ll also find that your willingness to act brings new encounters with His strength.
Personal Testimonies: Modern Encounters With God’s Provision
There are countless stories throughout church history and in modern missions where God’s promises of encouragement and protection have become real. Whether in dangerous lands or unfamiliar circumstances, God still works miracles and orchestrates divine appointments.
Missionaries often share moments when a timely word of Scripture, an unexpected ally, or even an unexplained burst of strength becomes the difference between success and defeat. One story tells of a missionary who, surrounded by danger, was approached by the local chief of police only to find out he was a fellow believer. At another time, a doctor named Angelo meaning “angel” brought necessary help at a critical moment. These are not coincidences; they are examples of “I have many people in this city” in action.
