Mark Lowry: What “Mary, Did You Know?” Reveals About The First Christmas | Kirk Cameron on TBN
Mark Lowry, a renowned singer, songwriter, and humorist, is best known for penning the beloved Christmas classic Mary, Did You Know?. With a career spanning many years as a performer with the Grammy Award-winning Gaither Vocal Band, Mark has touched countless lives through his music and storytelling.
In a recent interview, Mark shared his love for the Christmas season. “Christmas is my favorite time of year,” he said. “I love everything about it—the music, the smells from the kitchen, the lights on the Christmas tree, and most importantly, the Christmas story.”
Mark emphasized the importance of sharing the story of Christ’s birth. “It’s such a wonderful story—God came to Earth, wrapped in flesh, and walked among us. That’s big news! Prophets foretold it, and Mary knew the Messiah was coming. She was just a teenager when the angel appeared and told her she would give birth to the Savior.”
Reflecting on Mary’s faith, Mark noted, “When the angel explained how the Holy Spirit would overshadow her, Mary believed. Her response was, ‘Be it unto me as you say.’ She didn’t question God’s plan; she trusted and embraced it fully. That first Christmas is such an incredible story of faith and divine love.”
Mark also highlighted the deeper meaning of Christ’s arrival. “God never asked us to remember His birth, but He did ask us to remember His death. His birth is only worth celebrating because of His sacrifice on the cross. Jesus came to deliver us and to reconcile us to God. That’s the heart of Christmas—it’s a celebration of God sending His Son to fix our greatest problem and offer us eternal hope.”
Turning to his famous song, Mary, Did You Know?, Mark reflected on its inspiration. “I was asked to write a Christmas production for my church in 1984. The idea came from a monologue I wrote, imagining what Mary might have thought or felt as the mother of the Messiah. Phrases like, ‘The child you delivered will one day deliver you,’ and, ‘When you kissed your little baby, you kissed the face of God,’ were part of that script. Those words eventually became the lyrics for the song.”
Now, more than 30 years later, Mary, Did You Know? has been performed worldwide by countless artists and remains a favorite during the Christmas season. Mark humbly attributes its success to the powerful message at its core. “The song isn’t just about Mary—it’s about the incredible gift of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world.”
As Mark reminds us, “If we don’t tell the story of Christmas, the world will forget its true meaning. It’s not just about presents or festive meals—it’s about celebrating the greatest gift of all: God’s love and salvation through Jesus.”
