How To Discern Visions And Dreams From God | Joseph Prince Ministries
Have you ever wondered how to truly discern when a vision or dream is from God? Many Christians experience powerful dreams and stirring images in prayer or at night, and sometimes we find ourselves asking whether these are really from the Lord or merely from our own minds. Today, we’ll dive deep into understanding how God communicates through visions and dreams, how to test their origin, and how to embrace these spiritual experiences in your daily walk with Jesus.
God’s Primary Way of Leading Us—The Word and the Spirit
First and foremost, God leads His people through His Word—the Bible. Yet, Scripture itself is filled with rich imagery, metaphors, and actual visions. God often brings revelation in picture form—through both day-time visions and night-time dreams. This is a biblical principle, not reserved for a few, but an inheritance for every child of God under the new covenant!
When God imparts a vision or a dream, hold on to it. If the Lord has spoken, it will surely come to pass—even if it seems delayed. The Bible reassures us not to give up, for what God reveals, He fulfills in His perfect timing. This patient faith honors God and fosters expectation for His promises to manifest in our lives.
Understanding the Hazon Vision—God’s Prophetic Pictures
The Hebrew term Hazon refers to prophetic visions—God-breathed pictures delivered to the hearts of His people. Unlike dreams or visions influenced by the world or by the enemy, heavenly visions will always produce the peace, presence, and character of God. When God speaks through a vision, you’ll find it aligning with Scripture and resulting in righteous, uplifting, and life-giving fruit.
Distinguishing Godly Versus Dark Visions
It’s sobering to realize that not every supernatural vision comes from heaven. The enemy can attempt to plant destructive or fear-filled dreams. How do you tell the difference? If a vision shrouds your heart in fear, hopelessness, or condemnation, recognize it as not coming from God. In such cases, as soon as you wake up or become aware, claim your authority in Christ—rebuke it in the name of Jesus, and speak life and blessing over yourself and your loved ones.
By contrast, even when God gives a warning in a vision, it’s never to paralyze you with fear. Just like the prophet Agabus in the New Testament, when a warning dream came, it included a solution and an invitation to partner with God for breakthrough. Divine visions edify, comfort, exhort, and point you towards God’s faithfulness.
Visions and Dreams: Old Testament Versus New Testament
In the Old Testament, only prophets, priests, or kings typically received visions and dreams from God. But through Christ, all believers have been brought into a new relationship with God where His Spirit is poured out on all flesh. Joel’s prophecy—fulfilled at Pentecost—proclaims that “your sons and daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.”
This means that seeing visions and dreaming dreams is no longer reserved for a select spiritual elite. It’s an inheritance for every son and daughter of God. Does this make everyone a prophet? No—but it equips every believer to hear God’s voice for their own lives, families, and areas of influence.
The Faith Practice of Recording What God Reveals
When you sense God stirring your spirit—even if with fleeting images, impressions, or ideas—grab a notebook, journal, or use your smartphone to write it down. There’s power in stewarding God’s messages with practical faith. Ask Him, “Lord, how do you see my marriage, my work, my ministry, or my future?” Expect to receive; the Holy Spirit delights in partnering with you!
But remember, God does not override your will or turn you into a passive vessel (as counterfeits do in occult practices). The Holy Spirit likes to co-labor with you, inspiring your participation. Just as speaking in tongues requires your mouth, hearing from God and recording visions invites your willful engagement. Write down the vision, test it, and see how God confirms it by His Word and by the fruit it brings.
God Speaks Within Your Calling
Some might worry about missing out on spectacular visions—angels appearing, open visions seen by all present. Yet, the reality is that most of God’s visions are “inner visions”—pictures and impressions that arise in the heart and mind as you pray or rest in Him. When Saul (later Paul) encountered Christ on the road to Damascus, his companions heard the sound but did not see the glorious vision as he did. These personal visitations are often quiet and intimate—God speaks most profoundly in a still, small voice.
In your everyday life, God imparts visions that are in line with your current responsibilities—your family, calling, business, or ministry. Unless you carry a distinct prophetic office, God won’t typically reveal broad world events to you. Instead, He gives you vision and grace for that which He’s assigned to your stewardship. Expect to hear from God about the things that matter most in your walk with Him.
The Test of a True Vision: Edification, Exaltation, Comfort
Paul teaches in 1 Corinthians 14:3, “He who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men.” Any vision or word from the Lord will result in building you up, drawing you closer to Christ, strengthening your faith, and bringing encouragement or direction—not fear, heaviness, or condemnation. This litmus test protects your heart and ensures you only embrace what is truly from God.
Practical Steps to Discerning God’s Voice in Visions and Dreams
