Understanding the Priesthood and Sacrifice in Deuteronomy 18
In Deuteronomy 18:1-2, Scripture tells us that the Levite priests had no earthly inheritance among the tribes of Israel. Instead, the Lord Himself was their inheritance. Their sustenance came from the sacrifices offered by the people.
Sacrifice has always been a vital part of worship. Today, many emphasize God’s grace—and I believe in grace wholeheartedly—but we must not overlook the significance of sacrifice. As followers of Christ, we are called to live lives of surrender, continually offering ourselves to God.
Fasting: Unburdening Your Soul Before God
Under the Old Covenant, families would bring a bull or lamb to be sacrificed. God commanded them to set aside specific portions—the shoulder, the cheeks, and the stomach—for the priest. Though this may seem like an unusual instruction, it carries deep spiritual meaning for us today.
Jesus Christ is our High Priest under the New Covenant, and just as the priests received these portions, He invites us to bring Him our burdens:
The Shoulder – Surrendering Our Burdens
The shoulder represents the weight of life’s pressures—worry, fear, trials, and hardships. Matthew 23:4 says, “They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on men’s shoulders.” But Jesus invites us in Matthew 11:28-30:Fasting is an act of surrender. It’s laying our burdens before God, saying, “Lord, I can’t carry this on my own, but I trust You to handle it.”
The Cheek – Surrendering Our Emotions

The Power of Fasting in Isaiah 58
Isaiah 58 describes the fast that God has chosen—a time of breakthrough, freedom, and renewed strength. When we fast, we shift our focus from earthly concerns to divine solutions. We give God full control over our struggles, trusting Him to move in ways we never could on our own.
Are you ready to lay your burdens at the feet of Jesus? Surrender them today through prayer and fasting, and watch how God moves in your life.
