Christine Caine: How to Experience God’s Peace in Any Storm | Trusting God Through It All
Our confidence comes from knowing that our lives and future are in the loving, capable, and merciful hands of Jesus, who is good, does good, and will never leave or forsake us. When Paul told the Philippians that the peace of God would guard their hearts, they understood this military term because Philippi was a Roman colony, guarded by Roman soldiers. Paul was telling them that if they pray about everything, at all times, God’s supernatural peace—one that surpasses human understanding—will guard their hearts.
When we trust in God and leave our worries with Him, the all-powerful God who loves us will stand guard over us. The more we trust in God’s safe hands, the more we will experience His peace. Although the world around us may seem chaotic, the peace of God is available to us right now, and it transcends all understanding.
One of the greatest tools for witnessing to others today is the supernatural peace we can display in a divided, hostile world. It serves as a testimony to God’s faithfulness. When believers remain calm and peaceful in chaos, it provides an opportunity to talk about our faithful God, the Prince of Peace. In a world full of unrest, our peace gives us the chance to share the message of Jesus.
Having the peace of God doesn’t mean our problems will disappear, nor that our circumstances will change as we expect. What it does mean is that the turmoil inside our hearts and minds will be replaced with a calm confidence that defies logic. Our confidence comes from knowing that our lives and futures are in the hands of Jesus, who is good, does good, and will never abandon us.
As Jesus said in John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” In John 14:1, He also said, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.” From these verses, we see that peace is important to Jesus because He understands how much we need it. If the enemy steals our peace, he also affects our hearts.
Jesus is reminding us not to let our hearts panic. We have authority over our hearts, and we don’t need to let our emotions spiral out of control. Don’t lose your peace over something you can’t change—take it all to God, who is the only one who can do something about everything.
The truth is, storms will always come. They may be relational, financial, emotional, physical, environmental, or internal. Everyone will either be in a storm, about to enter one, or coming out of one. Life in this fallen world means that storms are inevitable. Those who claim life is always easy are missing the reality of a broken world. But in the midst of storms, we need to be disciplined enough to focus on God.
Taking everything to God and trusting that He is working on our behalf is key to finding peace. I recently faced a situation that could have caused me to spiral, but instead, I followed Paul’s advice from Philippians: I prayed and trusted in God’s peace.
