Thoughts, Words & Health – Pt 2 | Enjoying Everyday Life | Joyce Meyer
Every Christian desires to live a full, blessed life—one overflowing with health, joy, and peace. Yet, life sometimes weighs us down with sickness, anxiety, and relentless stress. As believers, we know that God wants more for us than simply surviving day after day. He wants us to thrive, to walk in wholeness, and to experience His healing wherever we’re hurting. In this teaching, we’ll dig deep into the powerful connections between our thoughts, our words, and our physical well-being. You’ll discover biblical wisdom, practical steps, and encouragement for your own healing journey.
The Power of Thoughts and Words Over Health
Most of us know that harmful thoughts and negative words can affect our spirits, but few realize just how deeply they impact our physical health, too. Everything starts in the heart and mind. Scripture repeatedly points out that our bodies, souls, and spirits are intimately connected—what goes on in one part ripples through the others. The hidden life of thoughts and feelings, though invisible to others, always shows up in time through our words, attitudes, and even health.
Consider the words of Jesus in Luke 12:2: “Nothing is so closely covered up that it will not be revealed, or hidden that it will not be made known.” This isn’t just about actions; it’s about everything we carry inside ourselves. We may try to hide our worries or refuse to confront our emotions, but eventually, these things manifest—sometimes as stress or sickness.
Breaking the Cycle of Stress and Sickness
It’s no secret that chronic stress wreaks havoc on our bodies. God designed us to cast our cares on Him, not to carry the crushing burden of anxiety every day. As we read in 1 Peter 5:7, “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” When we fail to do this, the consequences inevitably show up in our health. An anxious mind becomes fertile ground for disease, and what starts as emotional turmoil can work itself out in physical pain, headaches, digestive troubles, or fatigue.
The effect goes beyond simple mood shifts; unresolved negative emotions—whether anger, bitterness, jealousy, or resentment—can be toxic to our physical bodies. Proverbs 14:30 puts it plainly: “A calm and undisturbed mind and heart are life and health to the body, but envy, jealousy, and wrath are like rottenness to the bones.” Take a moment to reflect: Are you nourishing your body with peace, or are you allowing worry and frustration to chip away at your well-being?
Identifying Emotions That Impact Well-being
We all struggle with emotions from time to time, but some feelings are especially destructive if they linger. Anger, jealousy, self-pity, unforgiveness, hatred, and even persistent discouragement and complaining can sap your energy and bring down your health. God entrusts us with physical energy and the gift of life, not just to enjoy for ourselves, but to use for His purposes.
It’s a sobering thought: We dishonor this gift every time we squander our well-being through grudges, ongoing stress, or by maintaining a sour attitude. It’s always better to seek peace, even if it means sacrificing getting your way in a disagreement. Maintaining joy and unity isn’t just spiritual wisdom—it’s good medicine for your body, too!
Sowing Good Seeds Through Thought and Action
The Bible assures us that the seeds we sow in our lives—whether in actions, words, or private thoughts—will produce a harvest. When you sow seeds of love, forgiveness, gratitude, and hope, you’re creating an environment where both your soul and your body can flourish. Generosity and praise create joy; hope leads to fulfillment. The more you walk in these positive choices, the more peace and strength you’ll experience.
As Proverbs 17:22 so wisely reminds us: “A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones.” Science even backs this up! Laughter releases healing in our bodies and helps dissolve tension. Instead of letting heaviness rule your days, keep watch over your heart. Choose gratitude, joy, and lightness—even in the little things.
Understanding the Spiritual Roots of Physical Issues
Many people who struggle with ongoing illness feel isolated or misunderstood. The truth is, pain—whether physical or emotional—draws our attention and can easily cause us to pull away from others. The Bible recognizes the reality of suffering, but emphasizes that we are not alone in our struggles. God sees your pain, loves you, and walks with you through every season.
Our bodies, souls, and spirits are all interconnected. When one area is hurting, the others feel it as well. That’s why it’s crucial to examine not just external circumstances or medical conditions, but also your thoughts and emotions when dealing with persistent sickness. Sometimes, physical healing starts with forgiveness, releasing anger, or letting go of worry and self-pity.
Keys to Holding on to Joy During Sickness
Enduring long-term illness or chronic pain can be one of the toughest battles anyone faces. It often brings feelings of loneliness, frustration, and discouragement—especially when others can’t fully understand what you’re going through. During these moments, it helps enormously to anchor yourself in God’s love. Remind yourself, out loud if you must, “There will be an end to this.” Instead of letting despair settle in, intentionally speak hope and healing over your life, even if you haven’t seen results yet.
Staying engaged in life—attending church, praying, reading your Bible, and participating in daily routines as much as you’re able—combats the temptation to withdraw or give up. Even small acts of normalcy can help take your mind off pain and feed your spirit.
