Abraham Baldwin: Young Theologian and Statesman
Consider Abraham Baldwin, the youngest theologian in America during his era. At 21, he was a professor of divinity at Yale, went on to sign the Constitution from Georgia, and founded the University of Georgia in 1785—not merely as an educational institution, but as a seminary for gospel ministers. Most students today have no idea that their university’s roots are so deeply connected to the Christian faith. Baldwin once wrote, “A free government can only be happy when public principle and opinions are properly directed by religion and education… [We should] encourage and support the principles of religion and morality.” This is hardly the voice of a secularist.
James McHenry: Champion of the Scriptures
Another remarkable figure is James McHenry, namesake of Fort McHenry, known for its role in the War of 1812. As Secretary of War for Washington and Adams, and a signer of the Constitution, McHenry didn’t simply serve the nation militarily—he also championed the spread of God’s Word. He founded the Baltimore Bible Society (now the Maryland Bible Society), which still distributes Bibles to this day. McHenry asserted, “The Holy Scriptures can alone secure to society order and peace… In vain, without the Bible, we increase penal laws… [the Scriptures are] the only thing that can make government work the way it needs to.”
Gouverneur Morris: Architect of the Constitution’s Wording
Gouverneur Morris, another Constitution signer, was the most active member in drafting the document—responsible for much of its final language. He didn’t mince words about the necessity of faith, proclaiming, “There must be religion. When that ligament is torn, society is disjointed and its members perish… Religion is the only solid basis of good morals. Therefore, education should teach the precepts of religion and the duties of man toward God.” Clearly, the intention was for religious values to play a vital role in both public and private life.

The list doesn’t stop there. John Langdon, major general of the Revolution and governor of New Hampshire, was a founder of the American Bible Society. His public proclamations overflowed with gratitude for the “blessing of the gospel… the hope of future glory through the merits of a crucified savior.” Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, another military leader and founder of the Bible Society, and Roger Sherman, a theologian who contributed to the doctrinal creed of his denomination, all brought their faith directly into public service. Gunning Bedford, an aide to Washington and signer from Delaware, closed his official eulogy of George Washington by invoking the “triune God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.”
Alexander Hamilton and Christian Civic Engagement
Interestingly, Alexander Hamilton’s faith also played a significant role. In April 1804, Hamilton founded the Christian Constitutional Society. Its mission? To promote Christianity and uphold the Constitution. Hamilton wrote that the society’s purpose was to elect and support only those individuals who stood for both Christian faith and constitutional principles. This was America’s first attempt at what would later be recognized as “Christian coalitions” in the political arena.
Dismissing the Myth of a Godless Constitution
Given the overwhelming evidence from personal writings and official documents, it becomes illogical to suggest that these God-fearing men would intentionally create a secular or anti-Christian government. These leaders were men of uncompromising faith. Just as a committed follower of Christ wouldn’t endorse a godless agenda today, neither would these founders have done so then. The persistent narrative that our origins are void of faith simply doesn’t match the facts.
The “Finger of God” in American History
