Reflections on Christmas

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas! If your experience is anything like mine, it might not fit the traditional mold. My family celebrates a bit differently. Being in ministry for over 35 years, our schedules are unconventional. For us, Christmas doesn’t always fall on December 25. While most people enjoy family gatherings during the holidays, ministry often requires us to work double time. But this unique rhythm allows us to celebrate meaningfully—after the crowds have dispersed, we find time to cherish the season in our own way.

This leads us to a crucial question: What is Christmas really about? Is it confined to one day of festivities, or is there a deeper significance?

Why Celebrate Christmas?

To some, Christmas might seem like a whirlwind of activities—buying gifts, attending parties, or visiting loved ones. For others, it could involve prayer, worship, or even choir performances. But have you stopped to ask, “What did I just do?”

If Christmas feels like just another reason to gather, party, or exchange gifts, it’s time to revisit its purpose. Christmas is not about fleeting moments of celebration but about acknowledging a profound truth: the birth of Jesus Christ.

The Significance of Acknowledgment

We live in a world that thrives on recognition. From sports trophies to academic awards, acknowledgment has become a routine part of life. In places like Southern California, celebrations are so frequent they often lose meaning. Yet, in contrast, God’s acknowledgment of humanity is deeply intentional and unchanging.

The birth of Christ is a perfect example of this divine acknowledgment. Over 500 years before Jesus was born, the prophet Micah wrote:

“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times” (Micah 5:2).

This prophecy highlights Bethlehem’s significance as the birthplace of the Savior. It wasn’t by chance—it was God’s plan to bring salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ.

What Does This Mean for Us?

As we reflect on Christmas, let’s remember that it’s more than a holiday. It’s a celebration of God’s love for humanity. He sent His Son into the world to offer hope, salvation, and eternal life.

So, how will you carry the spirit of Christmas forward? Let it inspire you to live with purpose, reflect Christ’s love, and share His truth with others.
