Adrian Rogers: The Son of God Was Born For Our Salvation
Today, let’s reflect on the extraordinary miracle of birth—not just one, but three miraculous births that carry profound spiritual significance. These are the sinner’s birth, the Savior’s birth, and the second birth. Each of these speaks to a divine truth about life and faith.
In John 3, one of the most cherished chapters of the Bible, we meet Nicodemus, a Pharisee and ruler of the Jews. Nicodemus, intrigued by Jesus’ miracles, approaches Him at night, saying, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.” In response, Jesus redirects the conversation from miracles to the concept of spiritual rebirth, stating, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3).
The Three Miraculous Births
- The Sinner’s Birth – Our Natural Birth
Nicodemus begins by questioning Jesus: “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” This natural birth is the first miracle we all experience. It signifies entry into the physical world, but it also comes with a spiritual reality: our inherited sinful nature. As Ephesians 2:3 reminds us, “We are by nature children of wrath.” Every person born into the world carries this nature, requiring a deeper transformation beyond the physical. - The Savior’s Birth – The Birth of Jesus Christ
Nicodemus acknowledges Jesus as a teacher sent from God. This points us to the miraculous birth of the Savior, Jesus Christ, who came into the world to fulfill God’s redemptive plan. His birth was unique, born of a virgin, and foretold by prophets, demonstrating God’s profound love and purpose for humanity. - The Second Birth – Spiritual Rebirth
Jesus emphasizes that being “born again” is essential to enter the kingdom of God. This second birth is a spiritual transformation brought about by the Holy Spirit. It is not a physical rebirth but a divine renewal that allows us to be reconciled with God. Jesus explains, “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit” (John 3:6).
The Miracle of Rebirth
Nicodemus, though an educated and influential man, struggled to understand the concept of spiritual rebirth. However, Jesus patiently explained the difference between the natural and spiritual realms. Physical birth brings us into the natural world, but spiritual rebirth frees us from the bondage of sin and opens the way to eternal life in God’s kingdom.
This transformative message reminds us of God’s immense love and the hope offered through Jesus Christ. Whether reflecting on our natural birth, the Savior’s birth, or the second birth, each miracle draws us closer to the heart of God’s divine plan for humanity.
“Marvel not that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’” (John 3:7)
