Do Miracles Glorify Jesus Christ? The Biblical Test for Signs and Wonders

A key question every believer should ask is this: Does a miracle glorify the Lord Jesus Christ and advance the mission of the gospel? If a so-called miracle does not exalt Jesus as Lord, Savior, and King, then it is not biblically honoring—and it should be treated as a false miracle.

Yes, false miracles exist. That’s why the Bible teaches discernment when it comes to miracles, signs and wonders, and the preaching of the gospel. So what is the right balance? Is it the message or miracles? Or does Scripture connect them?

Let’s look at what the Bible actually says.

The Gospel Comes First—And Signs Follow

In Mark 16, Jesus appears to His disciples after the resurrection. The passage highlights three major truths:

  1. Jesus rebuked unbelief—because His followers refused to believe the eyewitness testimony of His resurrection.

  2. Jesus commissioned the church to preach the gospel to the entire world.

  3. Signs would follow believers as the gospel moves forward.

Jesus said to them: go into all the world and preach the gospel. Those who believe will be saved, and those who reject the message will be condemned. Then He stated that signs would follow those who believe—including deliverance from demonic oppression, supernatural protection, and healing for the sick.

After giving these words, Jesus ascended into heaven and sat at the right hand of God. And the disciples went out preaching everywhere, with the Lord working with them, confirming the message through accompanying signs.

Are Miracles Still Happening Today?

Some people claim miracles no longer happen because we have the Bible as God’s complete revelation. But that conclusion doesn’t match the overall biblical pattern. Scripture teaches that God’s gifts and calling are not revoked—and the New Testament expectation is that from the birth of the church until the end of the age, miracles would accompany the preaching of the gospel.

So the question isn’t whether God can perform miracles—He can, and He does.

The real issue is often perspective. Many people in the Western world struggle to believe because they think miracles are rare. But miracles still happen—God still heals, intervenes, and answers prayer in extraordinary ways. The problem is not that God stopped working. The problem is that many people have learned to expect less.

The Biblical Bottom Line on Signs and Wonders

Miracles are never meant to replace the gospel. They are meant to confirm and magnify the gospel. The message is always central: Jesus Christ crucified, risen, and reigning. Signs and wonders should point people toward Him—not toward personalities, hype, or spiritual entertainment.
