How Surrender Unlocks Peace: Lysa TerKeurst’s Testimony of Trusting God With the Outcome

If you’ve ever felt weighed down by anxiety, trying to steer your life toward the “good” outcome you think God should deliver, you’re not alone. So many of us carry invisible burdens, believing that if we don’t strategize, push, and control what happens next, everything could spiral out of control. But in a moving recent sermon, Lysa TerKeurst invites us to see a different way—a way of trust, stewardship, and remarkable peace even when the outcome is unknown.

God’s Promise of Partnership and Completion

The foundation of Lysa’s message comes from Philippians 1:2-6, where the apostle Paul thanks God for the believers’ “partnership in the gospel” and assures them, “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” So many of us quote that popular verse, but we often miss its rich context: our confidence in God is rooted not just in what He’ll do for us, but in our commitment to walk with Him in the work of the gospel. It’s about partnership—not spectatorship or control.

The Subtle Trap of Outcome Attachment

It’s natural to hope for good outcomes, especially if we serve a good God. Lysa openly confesses how easy it is to become attached to the positive ending we envision. Our minds run ahead, crafting scenarios where hurt is redeemed, prayers are answered just so, and everything makes sense. But what happens when real life unfolds differently? Often, our loving desire for “God’s best” slides into the hidden territory of control.

We may not see ourselves as controlling people—maybe you’re easy going about lunch plans, or where to travel with friends. But when it comes to your deepest longings or family struggles, maybe you can relate to what Lysa describes: holding tightly to what you believe is the only good outcome, feeling like “everything depends on me” to keep things on track.

This mindset leads to frustration, anxiety, and the false idea that it’s up to us to fix, steer, and rescue. And over time, striving for control when life feels unpredictable can leave us emotionally exhausted and spiritually confused—a place the enemy loves to keep us trapped.

Learning True Spiritual Stewardship

So what’s the alternative? Lysa shares that God has been gently shifting her from anxiety-fueled control mode into what Scripture calls stewardship. There’s a critical difference: control says “everything depends on me and my desired outcome,” but stewardship says, “I will trust God with the outcome, while faithfully managing what He’s actually put in my hands.”

Just as you wouldn’t neglect a baby under the guise of “letting go and letting God,” stewardship means being actively responsible for what you can influence. But it also means letting go of what’s not yours to carry—ultimately, the outcome of your work or prayers. God never promised us control over results. Instead, He invited us into daily, obedient partnership with Him: “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4). Not by granting every wish, but by planting His own desires in our hearts, aligned with His perfect wisdom.

From Surrender to Unexpected Peace

This is where stewardship takes us: to profound surrender. Not the defeatist kind that gives up, but the trusting kind that says, “My job is to be obedient; God’s job is everything else.” It’s a freedom that enables us to stop gripping so tightly, to release outcomes into God’s far wiser hands.

Jesus never promised us a trouble-free life. On the contrary, He said, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). When we relinquish our compulsion to control and exchange it for faithful stewardship, God’s unexplainable peace floods in—regardless of what happens.

Lysa reflects honestly on how, when she’s stressed and trying to force outcomes, she doesn’t look much different than anyone else in the world—anxious, tense, easily offended. But when she steps into stewardship, keeping her eyes on Jesus and tending to what matters most, peace and spiritual distinctiveness return. It’s never about living in denial of hardship. Acknowledging your pain, addressing it with honesty, even seeking counseling are all part of healthy stewardship. But fighting for control simply leads to distraction and spiritual drain.

A Testimony of Obedience and Unimaginable Results

Glancing back in her own ministry, Lysa shares a remarkable story—one with echoes of divine orchestration she couldn’t have planned or predicted. Twenty-four years ago, exhausted after a retreat, she boarded a flight with a simple strategy: read her Bible to deter small talk. But God had other plans. The man sitting beside her noticed her Bible and struck up a conversation. Though he knew about God, he didn’t truly know Him.

As they talked, Lysa was nudged by the Holy Spirit to give this man her treasured, marked-up Bible—a Bible filled with her own notes, tear stains, and even her children’s doodles in the margins. She hesitated, bargaining with God—maybe she could buy him a new one later? But the gentle urging persisted.

Eventually, Lysa obeyed: she placed her Bible in his hands, trusting God with the unlikely outcome. Walking off the plane, she battled the urge to follow and retrieve her Bible if it ended up in an airport trashcan. But the message from God was clear: “Your job was to
