When the Holy Spirit Controls Your Life | Dr. David Jeremiah
Embracing the Power of the Holy Spirit in Everyday Christian Living
As believers, we often hear about the importance of allowing the Holy Spirit to guide and control our lives. Yet, many of us wonder what practical difference this makes in our daily walk with Christ. How does the Spirit shape our habits, enhance our prayers, refine our relationships, and empower our witness? In this article, let’s explore how yielding to the Holy Spirit can revolutionize three crucial areas: our worship, our walk, and our witness. Drawing wisdom from Paul’s letter to the Colossians, we’ll discover how to cultivate a more consistent, grace-filled Christian life.
The Pursuit of Spiritual Consistency
Consistency is something we all crave whether it’s in our professions, relationships, or faith journeys. The world’s fascination with self-improvement and habit formation is evident in the countless bestsellers on routines and productivity. But as Christians, we seek something deeper: a steadfast spiritual life anchored by the Holy Spirit. The Apostle Paul offers powerful advice to the believers in Colossae, laying out a practical blueprint for godly living. His words are just as relevant for us today, longing to be consistently devoted in prayer, gracious in speech, and wise in our daily walk.
The Holy Spirit’s Role in Our Worship: Developing a Life of Prayer
Paul urges us: “Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving.” (Colossians 4:2) For the follower of Christ, prayer is far more than a ritual it’s our lifeline to God, charged by the Holy Spirit within us.
1. Pray Diligently
Prayer is not optional for the Christian. It’s a command, not a suggestion. We’re not called to pray only when it’s convenient or when a crisis hits, but to develop a steady rhythm of communion with God. Jesus himself told His disciples to “always pray and never give up.” Throughout the New Testament, we see that the early church made prayer central to every aspect of their community life. They were devoted to it, weaving it seamlessly into both their ordinary and extraordinary moments.
2. Be Watchful in Prayer
Paul calls us to approach prayer with vigilance staying spiritually alert and aware of our own needs and the needs of others. That means more than simply staying awake during prayer (though we’ve all dozed off at one point or another!). To be watchful is to be attuned to God’s movements, to sense moments of spiritual opportunity or danger, and to intercede for those around us. Just as a watchman scans the horizon, Christians must guard their prayer lives from complacency and distraction.
3. Practice Thankful Prayer
Too often, we approach God with a list of requests while forgetting the power of gratitude. Scripture instructs us to “enter His gates with thanksgiving.” Starting our prayers with a heart of thankfulness transforms our perspective reminding us of God’s faithfulness and fostering humility. No matter our circumstances, there is always something to thank God for: life, provision, family, church, and above all, His redeeming love.
4. Pray Evangelistically
Paul famously asked for prayers not to escape his trials, but for boldness and open doors to proclaim the gospel. Asking God for opportunities to share Christ aligns our hearts with His mission and makes us aware of divine appointments. When the Holy Spirit leads our prayers, He opens pathways for us to speak truth and life into the hearts of those around us sometimes in ways we never expected. True, God is the only one who can open doors, but He often waits for us to ask in faith.
The Spirit’s Guidance in Our Walk: Living Wisely among Others
Paul continues, “Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time.” (Colossians 4:5) The Christian journey is not a sprint, but a series of faithful steps each one an act of obedience and trust. The Holy Spirit empowers us to walk wisely, not just for our sake, but as living witnesses to the world.
1. One Step at a Time
The Christian life is a journey, and God gives us strength one day at a time. We don’t receive all we need for the week in one dose; instead, we walk by faith, relying daily on the Spirit’s provision. When we try to get ahead of God, frustration sets in. The key is to match our steps with God’s guidance and to be present in each moment the Lord gives us.
2. Walking toward the World, Not Away
Some believe that being holy means totally separating from anyone outside the church. But Jesus walked among the outcasts, the rejected, and the brokenhearted. Authentic Christian living involves engaging the world, not hiding from it. Staying connected with non-believers is essential if we are to fulfill the Great Commission. As believers, we are called to shine as beacons of hope, reflecting the love of Christ as we navigate friendships, workspaces, and neighborhoods. There can be no impact without contact.
3. Redeeming the Time
Opportunities to represent Christ don’t last forever. “Redeem the time” means being alert for moments when we can sow seeds of faith, offer encouragement, or simply model the love of Jesus. Every interaction is a chance to point someone toward Christ. We may not always get it right, but the world is watching especially in these darkened times. The brighter the darkness, the more our light matters.
The Spirit’s Influence on Our Witness: Speaking with Grace and Wisdom
Paul’s counsel continues: “Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.” (Colossians 4:6) Few things prove more difficult than taming the tongue but the Holy Spirit can transform our
