Night Vision – Pastor Sarah Jakes Roberts

How Can We Pray For You? Have you signed up yet?

After Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist, He was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where He fasted and was tempted by the devil for 40 days and 40 nights. While we do not know exactly how much time passed between His victory over Satan and the events in our passage, we can assume there was a period of transition.

By the time we reach Matthew 4:12, Jesus has received news about John the Baptist. Scripture states:

“Now when Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, He withdrew to Galilee. Leaving Nazareth, He went and lived in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali—this fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: ‘The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned.’ From that time on, Jesus began to preach, saying, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.'” (Matthew 4:12-17)

A Prayer for Guidance

Spirit of the Living God, I come before You in need of Your wisdom, Your insight, and Your strength. Lord, I thank You for the gift of revelation that has gathered us here today—both in person and online—not for entertainment, not for mere inspiration, but to know You more deeply and understand our response to Your call.

God, I ask that You use me as an instrument—one who presents the people to You and You to the people. Where there is fear, replace it with courage. Where there is weariness, renew our strength. Let me decrease so that You may increase, transforming lives, healing hearts, and reigniting passion. Lord, may we leave this place equipped with night vision. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

The Power of Night Vision

Imagine if I were to turn off all the lights in this room right now. After a brief moment of panic, your eyes would slowly begin to adjust. It takes approximately 20 minutes for the human eye to undergo a process called dark adaptation, where the retina adjusts to lower light levels. However, even after adjusting, your vision in darkness is never as clear or detailed as it is in the light.

That’s why, when you turn off the lights in your bedroom, it takes a moment before you can navigate the space without stumbling. If you’ve ever stubbed your toe in the dark, you understand this process all too well! (I recently saw a video where someone encouraged people to say, “Thank You, Jesus!” when they stub their toe. Now, I don’t know what comes out of your mouth in that moment, but if you’re able to say “Praise the Lord!”—well, you’re truly saved!)

A Strategy for Darkness

Despite our ability to adjust to darkness, our vision remains limited. That’s why, in 1939, German engineers sought to develop night vision technology for warfare. Soldiers could adapt to the dark, but their ability to perceive details, depth, and color remained compromised—putting them at a disadvantage in battle.

The solution? A strategy that allowed them to see in the dark. They realized that true power in battle wasn’t just about fighting in the light but learning how to leverage the darkness to their advantage.

Likewise, as believers, we must develop spiritual night vision—the ability to navigate through seasons of uncertainty, hardship, and spiritual warfare. Darkness may intimidate others, but those with faith understand that God provides vision even in the darkest times.

Are you ready to see clearly in the midst of darkness? It’s time to develop your night vision!
