Jeremiah 15:16 says, “Your words were found, and I ate them, and Your Word became the joy and delight of my heart.” This verse teaches us an essential truth about how we approach God’s Word. Rather than asking, “What should I do?”—a question driven by a mindset of rules and tasks—the first response should be to consume the Word, to let it nourish us deeply.

Many people struggle with rebellion, addiction, and a feeling of emptiness. Often, they try to satisfy these deep needs with superficial fixes: food, entertainment, social media, or other distractions. Yet, they soon realize these only bring momentary relief. This craving is spiritual—a hunger for true, lasting nourishment found only in God’s Word. Isaiah emphasizes this point, asking, “Why spend your labor on what doesn’t satisfy?” (Isaiah 55:2).

Sometimes, we mistake physical hunger for this spiritual longing. Many of us turn to the fridge, the TV, or social media, thinking these will fill the void. While these activities have their place, they cannot replace the sustenance of God’s Word. Without it, we end up feeling emptier than before. Hunger can even impact our mood; like physical hunger makes us irritable, a lack of spiritual nourishment leaves us spiritually restless.

This concept is reflected in the story of Gideon, who had to hide as he threshed wheat, protecting his food from enemies who constantly tried to steal the harvest. Gideon’s quiet determination to preserve his food symbolizes our need to safeguard our spiritual “harvest” from distractions and deceptions that steal our focus from God’s Word.

David’s warriors show us what it means to protect our spiritual food. When enemies came to steal their harvest, they stood firm, holding tightly to their swords—a symbol of holding firmly to God’s Word. Their strength came from valuing and protecting what they had grown and fought for.

Let this be an encouragement: cherish, protect, and consume God’s Word as your daily bread. Stand firm and let it truly satisfy your deepest hunger, filling your heart with joy and peace.
