October 31st: Reformation Day vs. Halloween
Today’s October 31st, 2024, a date known in popular culture for Halloween but, for Christians, holds deeper significance as Reformation Day. While pagans may find this day unsettling, believers celebrate God’s transformative work through reformers like John Hus, John Wycliffe, Zwingli, Calvin, and Luther. These flawed yet courageous individuals, through God’s grace, restored the church’s focus on His Word. We honor their legacy today, mindful of our own spiritual blind spots, just as they had theirs.
Learning from the Reformers and the Ancients
In preparing sermons, I seek wisdom directly from God’s Word before turning to historical Christian figures. These ‘ancients’—Knox, Spurgeon, and Ryle, among others—ground my understanding, as I prefer studying those who won’t shift in theological stance. My approach? “If they’re not dead, they’re not read.” Through their writings, we see the power of steadfast belief across time.
The Importance of Voting and Christian Influence
With the election days away, many Christians are debating whether or not to vote. Yet, choosing to abstain reflects a missed opportunity to influence our world for good. Imagine if believers during Washington or Bradford’s time had taken this stance—they would’ve been absent from history’s most impactful moments. Choosing not to engage, even now, diminishes our witness and the light we’re called to be.
For those who feel challenged by this message, consider it a call to action. As we approach this crucial vote, let’s embrace our role as influencers for truth, standing firm in our values and active in shaping the future.
