Welcome to enjoying everyday life with New York Times best selling author Joyce Meyer.
On today’s program, Joyce will be teaching from Galatian and Philippians. Galatians is all about god’s amazing race.
We’ll learn how the power of the Holy Spirit is what enables us to do what god asks of us, not our own strength and effort.
Meanwhile, Philippians teaches us about joy and how true lasting joy comes only through faith in Jesus Christ and serving others.
Now, here’s Joyce with today’s teaching.
I have marveled and hondered as a minister.
Things that sometimes, and I don’t mean this judgmentally, I just don’t get it.
Maybe something will come out about a certain minister that he’s been having an affair or whatever for the last 3 years.
I do not grasp how anybody could be doing that and stand here and do this.
I don’t I would be petrified to do that.
I mean, I just I come on.
I mean, that’s a holy thing to handle the word of god.
And to stand in front of god’s people and be an example.
Now I know we’re we’re human and we can make mistakes.
But at least if you’re gonna do something like that, don’t do it behind a pulpit.
That’s a holy place for god. No reverential fear.
Are you understanding me? So, yes, we’re free from the law.
And we live under grace.
And thank god we live in the dispensation of grace, I love grace.
I love the mercy of god.
I love knowing that my sins are forgiven and that god’s never gonna give up on me.
But I also love god enough that I’m gonna spend every waking moment of my life trying to do what I believe he wants me to do wait a minute.
Not because I’m afraid that he’ll get mad at me.
If I don’t, god doesn’t want us to try to do what’s right to get him to love us.
He wants us to love him so much because he loves us that we want to do what’s right.
And so we work to do what’s right because of that.
One of the most important things in Galatians chapter 1 is found in verse 10.
And I’ve missed my whole sermon here. Why?
I’m gonna have a master clean up on my mic.
I’m supposed to be writing a book off of this. So Galatians 110.
Paul said, if I were seeking to be popular with people, or if I was seeking the approval of man, am I seeking the approval of man or of god?
If I’m trying to please man, if I were trying to please, man, I would not now be a servant of Christ.
Wow. He’s got a great section here on people pleasing.
That if I’m gonna live trying to please people instead of trying to please god, I’m gonna miss everything that god has for me in my life.
Come on. Let’s read escalations 110 through 24.
For now, am I seeking the approval of man or of god, or am I trying to please, man?
If I were still trying to please man, I would not now be a servant of Christ.
For I would have you know, brothers, that the gospel that was preached by me is not man’s gospel.
For I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ.
For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of god violently and tried to destroy it.
And I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people.
So extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my father, But when he who had set me apart before I was born, so you’re set apart before you’re born for something.
Amen? Every single one of us were set apart before we’re even born for something.
When he called me by his grace and was pleased to reveal his son in me in order that I might preach him among the gentiles, Now look at look at the last line of verse 16.
I did not immediately consult with anyone. I love that.
He said, when god called me, I didn’t go ask ten people if they thought it was alright.
I can tell you when god called me, I didn’t know anybody that thought it was alright.
Even Dave didn’t like it the 1st few weeks.
Because he didn’t understand why god called me and not him.
But he’s a smart man that didn’t take him very long and He listened to god.
God said, I’ve called her. And if you do what I want you to do, you’ll be happy.
You let her do what I want her to do? She’ll be happy.
If you don’t do what you’re supposed to be doing in life, you are not gonna be happy.
Running from god is not a happy place to be.
And Paul Paul says he was he was not impressed by people.
He didn’t have to hang out with the important people to feel good about himself.
He already knew who he was, So if somebody didn’t like what he was doing, it didn’t concern him that much.
Now the Bible does say that we should live to please our neighbor and not please ourself.
And you’re saying, well, then Wait a minute. You’re saying, don’t please people, please people.
Which do you want us to do, Joyce?
Well, the thing is is we do live to please people But if pleasing people means I can’t please god Okay.
I’ll get out here in the mud for a minute and see what happens.
A woman’s married to an unsaved man. He refuses to let her go to church.
What should she do? Go anyway. You say why?
Because that’s something god has called her to do. Smith Wiggles’ worst wife did that.
He was a great preacher, great man of faith.
Uh, he later he was, But he told his wife that she couldn’t go to church and she’d go.
And every time she’d come home, he’d have her locked out of the house and she’d sleep on the back porch.
And then in the morning, when he’d let her in, she’d good morning, Smithy, and she’d cook his breakfast and be just as sweet and nice He ended up getting saved and becoming a fantastic preacher.
Let me tell you something.
When somebody tells you not to read your Bible, not not to go to church, you know, all these kinds of things, they’re not even gonna respect you if you don’t do what you know is right and your heart to do.
They might get mad. You know, people that you like to control you, they don’t respect you.
I’m gonna find one person here that’s alive that I can talk to.
If you’re in relationship with somebody and you let them push you around all the time, they don’t respect you.
There’s actually a part of them that wants you to stand up to them, and they’re gonna get mad at first.
But if you stay your ground, it could be the thing that turns their life around.
Amen? Boy, I do not know where I’m at, but I got 3 minutes to figure it out and get out of here.
Oh, I’ve been really bad tonight.
Actually, I’m getting it preached just not in the order I was supposed to.
What are some of the things you can get into works of the flesh about?
Trying to change yourself by yourself.
How many of you have just frustrated yourself no end trying to change yourself, and the more you try, the worst you act.
I gotta try it somewhere.
And it’s not that god doesn’t want us to try, We make an effort, but it has to be an effort in and through god asking for his help not us making our own plan and then expecting god to bless it.
Do you understand the difference? Yeah. It’s one thing.
If I go to church and I hear a message on the importance of words.
And this is what I used to do.
So I would go home and think, I’m not saying a thing.
And so I would And then people said, what is wrong with you?
And now that’s right. You don’t like it if I talk.
You don’t like it if I don’t talk. Can’t do anything right. No matter what you do, people aren’t happy.
Anybody out there? Okay. Well, what I should have done was been convicted by the message.
Yes, lord. I have problems with my mouth. I agree with you.
I wanna change God, but I cannot change if you don’t change me. Help me, lord.
Help me. If you leave god out of the equation, it’s never going to work.
And all you’re ever gonna have is frustration because of the works of the flesh.
Another thing that’s works of the flesh, and this is even almost worse than trying to change yourself, and let’s try to change other people.
I don’t even have time to get into that.
How about trying to force those that you love to love god?
Oh, boy. Frustration.
How about trying to make people like you and accept you?
Here’s a good one.
How about trying to make god hurry?
Now that is really a waste of time.
Worry is works of the flesh because it’s our energy trying to solve our problem that only god has the answer to Re reasoning is work of the flesh.
You can ponder something, but when you reason to the point where you get confused, now you’ve gone too far.
Because confusion is not from god.
So we are to avoid works of the flesh and learn to live by faith.
We’re no longer living under the law but we still have moral and ethical codes that god has written in our heart that we need to obey.
We don’t need to be afraid of god, but we need to have a reverential fear of god knowing that he’s almighty that he means what he says.
And if we want to have a good life, then we need to do what he says. Amen?
So Paul’s coming in with this message.
They great message now of Grace, which they had never heard, and you’ll find out as we go on tomorrow that the Jews that were being saved, man, they had such a hard time with the gentiles being included because the Jews hated the gentiles because they followed the law and the gentiles didn’t even know the law.
So now Paul comes along and says, oh, god’s gonna forgive these guys too.
Even though they never even tried to follow the law, well, can you imagine what that did to the Jewish mentality?
We don’t need to go through life frustrated because god loves us and wants to help us.
He’s right there waiting for us to exchange our trying for trusting.
