Count It All Joy | Victoria Osteen
Life is full of ups and downs, and as believers, we all long to move from one victory to the next, growing stronger and higher in our walk with God. Sometimes, though, reaching new heights feels more like moving from one challenge to another. If you’re feeling worn out from life’s battles, you’re not alone — but be encouraged! God has designed a better way for us to experience his power and move forward with hope, no matter what we face.
Resting in God’s Strength, Not Struggle
It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that we must struggle and stress our way to victory. Yet, God’s heart is for us to live from a place of rest and trust. When we put him first, nurture our hearts with his Word, and seek his plans, we can trust that he will guide us exactly where we need to be. Worry and frustration don’t speed up God’s timing — they only rob us of our peace. Real progress comes when we rest in God’s presence and allow his joy to fill our lives.
Choosing Joy in Life’s Trials
The Bible gives us powerful wisdom in James 1:4: “Consider it all joy when you face trials of many kinds.” Notice, we’re not told to enjoy pain, but to find lasting joy in the midst of struggles. God does not intend for trials to wear us down or diminish our faith. Instead, he uses them to strengthen and refine us, building perseverance and trust so we can lack nothing that we need for a victorious life.
The key is where we find our joy. Our real strength isn’t found in avoiding hardship, but in focusing on the God who remains sovereign through it all. Circumstances may shift, and feelings of happiness may come and go, but the joy of the Lord is anchored deeply within us and cannot be shaken. This divine joy is a gift from God, equipping us to rise above the difficulties we encounter.
The True Test of Faith Isn’t What You Think
If you’re like most people, you might find it strange to associate joy with adversity. Human nature tells us that joy comes after we get through the tough times, not during them! But Scripture challenges us to change our mindset. We have a real choice when facing trials: we can focus on hardship and misery, or we can choose to look to God, who is always working to bring about good in our lives.
Deciding to “count it all joy” isn’t about ignoring pain or pretending everything is perfect. It’s a conscious decision to trust that, even in the fire, God is drawing out something precious within us. He doesn’t just want us to passively tolerate difficulties; he wants us to grow, to discover hidden strength, and to develop character that stands the test of time.
God’s Refining Process: Mining the Gold Within
God is constantly working to purify and shape us into something beautiful — pure gold. Through every obstacle and setback, he is providing us opportunities to step up, deepen our faith, and build persistence. Ask yourself: Are you stepping over obstacles, or are you stepping up to find new strength in God? Every challenge can bring us closer to God’s heart if we choose to see it as part of his refining process.
When we try to overcome life’s hurdles in our own strength, we quickly come to the end of ourselves. That’s why it’s vital to remember that our willpower will only take us so far; God’s power, however, never fails. Leaning into God’s joy — resting in his peace and delight — is how we stay strong and rise above discouragement.
The Power of Perspective: What Are You Believing?
Your belief about your current challenge will shape the outcome as much as the challenge itself. Focusing on the problem leads to frustration and exhaustion, but focusing on God and his promises leads to growth and hope. Even when it feels like you’re just trying to make it through, God is watching to see how you will respond and what lessons you’ll carry forward.
Just like a good teacher wants to see you pass the test, God desires for you to succeed, grow wiser, and gain perseverance through every season. The enemy works overtime to steal our joy, tempting us to blame others or dwell on the negative. But God has already placed everything you need to overcome on the inside of you. The treasure is there — sometimes you just have to dig a little deeper to uncover it.
Grow Through Every Challenge
If you’re going through it, let God help you grow through it. The book of Romans offers a wonderful promise: “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13). What you believe about yourself and your situation truly impacts the outcome. Will you believe the negative voices that say you can’t make it, or will you embrace God’s declaration that you are more than a conqueror through him?
Joy is not simply about being happy when times are good. True, godly joy plugs you into God’s power even when things are tough. It helps you bounce back stronger, wiser, and filled with renewed faith for the future.
Don’t Let Anything Steal Your Joy
As you walk through life’s trials, remember this: God doesn’t want you to be beaten down by your circumstances. He wants to build you up, to make you stronger, and to fill you with a joy that carries you from strength to strength. The enemy will always look for ways to rob you of that joy — whether through comparison, complaining, or discouragement — but choosing to focus on God’s promises will anchor you in hope.
Allow God’s joy to well up inside you. His gift of joy is not dependent on what’s happening around you, but on the assurance of his goodness and faithfulness. Joy is what lifts you above the storm and gives
