Palm Sunday Meaning: Jesus the Triumphant King Who Chose the Cross for You
Six days before the crucifixion, Jesus arrived in Bethany with His disciples and those traveling alongside them. They came to the home of Lazarus, Mary, and Martha to share a meal and rest for the night. This was the same Lazarus whom Jesus had raised from the dead.
Earlier, when Lazarus became gravely ill, Mary and Martha urgently sent word to Jesus: “Your friend is sick.” Jesus came, but He arrived after Lazarus had already died. In sorrow, the sisters said, “If You had been here sooner, our brother would not have died.”
Moved by their grief, Jesus wept. Then He stood before the tomb and commanded, “Open the grave.” Though Lazarus had been dead for days, Jesus cried out, “Lazarus, come forth!” And Lazarus walked out alive, still wrapped in grave clothes. Jesus said, “Loose him and let him go.” What joy and wonder must have filled that moment.
Jesus and Lazarus: A Deep Friendship
Scripture reveals that Lazarus was one of Jesus’ close friends. Their relationship was personal, genuine, and strong. Lazarus also appears to have been a man of means, able to host Jesus and many followers in his home.
That evening, Mary poured expensive perfume over Jesus’ feet an act of honor, worship, humility, and extravagant love. Some criticized her, calling it wasteful and saying the money should have been given to the poor. But Jesus defended her, saying:
“Leave her alone. She has anointed Me for burial.”
Even in that peaceful home, the cross was already on His heart.
The Weight of the Cross Was Already Upon Him
Jesus knew exactly what awaited Him in Jerusalem. He was not unaware or surprised by what was coming. He understood the suffering, rejection, and crucifixion ahead.
That is why this dinner in Bethany mattered so deeply. It was a sacred moment of friendship and strength before the greatest battle in human history. The One who would comfort millions also received comfort from a friend.
Palm Sunday: The Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem
The next day, Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on a young donkey, fulfilling ancient prophecy. Crowds gathered with excitement, waving palm branches and shouting:
“Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the King of Israel!”
Palm branches were symbols of celebration and victory. In Israel’s history, they were waved when enemies were defeated and great triumph had come.
The people believed Jesus was coming to overthrow Roman rule and establish an earthly kingdom. But they misunderstood His mission.
He did not come to defeat Rome.
He came to defeat sin.
He came to conquer death.
He came to break the power of darkness.
He came to save humanity.
What Does Hosanna Mean?
The word Hosanna means:
- Save us now
- Rescue us now
- Give us victory now
- Deliver us now
That ancient cry still speaks today.
How many hearts still whisper:
- Jesus, save us now
- Heal us now
- Deliver us now
- Restore us now
- Bring peace now
Our world still needs a Savior and Jesus is still the answer.
The Determination of Christ
After entering Jerusalem, Jesus spoke with holy resolve:
“The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.”
He compared Himself to a grain of wheat that must fall into the ground and die in order to bring forth much fruit. Through His death, life would come to countless others.
Then He said:
“Now My soul is troubled. And what shall I say? Father, save Me from this hour? But for this purpose I came to this hour. Father, glorify Your name.”
Jesus felt the weight of the cross. He felt the anguish. Yet He remained fully committed to the Father’s will.
The Victory of the Cross
Jesus declared:
“Now is the judgment of this world. Now the ruler of this world will be cast out. And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to Myself.”
Through the cross and resurrection, Jesus won the greatest victory ever known.
He broke the power of sin.
He defeated death.
He shattered Satan’s hold over humanity.
He opened the way for salvation.
He made freedom available to all who believe.
Why Palm Sunday Still Matters Today
Palm Sunday is not just a historical event. It is a living reminder that Jesus came as a victorious King.
Because of Him, you can triumph over:
- Fear
- Shame
- Guilt
- Addiction
- Bondage
- Despair
- Spiritual oppression
- Brokenness
- The pain of the past
The cross brings cancellation. The resurrection brings new life. Christ gives hope, peace, healing, and purpose.
He Chose the Cross for You
Jesus could have turned away. He could have refused the suffering. But He chose love.
He chose obedience.
He chose mercy.
He chose redemption.
He chose you.
That is why Scripture says:
“Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
Celebrate the Triumphant King
Palm Sunday invites us to remember, rejoice, and worship. Lift your eyes to the King who entered Jerusalem in humility and left the grave in power.
He is not weak.
He is not distant.
He is not defeated.
He is mighty.
He is risen.
He is victorious.
He is the King of Glory.
Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord!
