Breaking Free from the Greatest Lie: Finding True Freedom in God’s Design
Good morning, friends, and welcome to another devotional on The Kirk Cameron Show. As we begin this day, here’s a simple but powerful truth to hold on to: obedience is freedom. Real freedom doesn’t come from trying to control our own lives but from following the plan of the One who created us.
You and I were never designed to be our own little kings and queens. Left to ourselves, we believe lies about who we are and what we need—and those lies always lead to destruction. Scripture tells us that “he who trusts in his own heart is a fool,” and “there is a way that seems right to man, but its end is death.”
Parents and grandparents know this well. Even small children, who can’t feed or protect themselves, resist authority. They fight to rule their world, rejecting wisdom that would keep them safe. And if we’re honest, we do the same. We push against God’s leadership, wanting Him to sign off on our wish lists. When He gives us what we want, we praise Him. But when He doesn’t, we doubt His goodness.
This is the dangerous delusion: believing that life is better when we’re in charge. But God doesn’t leave us there. In His grace, He breaks through our self-made illusions. The gospel dismantles our pride and self-sufficiency, calling us back to the joy of surrender. Grace wakes us up, teaches us wisdom, and restores us to the path of life, health, and joy.
Psalm 119 reminds us: “Joyful are the people of integrity who follow the instructions of the Lord… Make me walk along the path of your commands, for there is where my happiness is found.” True freedom is found not in doing whatever we want, but in living under the loving leadership of God.
So today, instead of chasing after control, let’s embrace the freedom of obedience. Let’s trust the One who knows us better than we know ourselves. In His will, we find life. In His commands, we find joy. And in His love, we find the only freedom that lasts.
