How to Live in a Crooked and Perverse Generation
Philippians 2:5-18 (ESV) – A Call to Humility and Faithfulness in a Corrupt World
Philippians 2:5-18 teaches us about the power of humility and obedience to God, using Jesus Christ as the ultimate example. Paul urges believers to adopt the same attitude that Christ had—a mindset of humility and selflessness. Although Jesus existed in the very form of God, He did not consider equality with God something to be grasped. Instead, He emptied Himself, took the form of a servant, and became like mankind. He humbled Himself, even to the point of dying on the cross.
As a result of His obedience, God highly exalted Jesus and gave Him a name above every name. At the name of Jesus, every knee will bow—whether in heaven, on earth, or under the earth—and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, bringing glory to God the Father.
Paul then encourages the Philippians, saying, “Just as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence but even more in my absence, continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling.” This is because it is God who works in us, both to will and to act according to His good purpose. Paul calls the believers to do everything without complaining or arguing, so that they may prove themselves to be blameless and pure, children of God, shining like stars in a crooked and depraved generation.
Paul emphasizes the importance of living as lights in the world, holding firm to the Word of Life. When Christ returns, Paul wants to rejoice, knowing that his labor among the Philippians was not in vain. Even if he is poured out as a drink offering on the sacrifice of their faith, he will still rejoice and share that joy with them.
Paul’s message speaks not only to the Philippians but also to us today, reminding us of the crooked and perverse nature of the world and how believers are called to live differently. We must stand firm in our faith, resist the pressures of sin, and shine as lights in the darkness.
Application to Today: We live in a time where societal values often go against biblical teachings, and the challenges to our faith seem overwhelming. The cultural and political landscape may seem to be turning away from righteousness and truth. There is a growing emphasis on issues like immorality, injustice, and lawlessness, which can leave us feeling disappointed and anxious about the future.
However, in the midst of these challenges, Philippians 2 calls us to respond with humility, faithfulness, and joy. We are not to be discouraged by the world’s rejection of God’s Word but to remain steadfast, knowing that God is working in us to bring about His will. We must also remember that Christ’s victory will be fully realized when every knee bows and every tongue confesses His Lordship.
In a world that increasingly promotes sin and disobedience to God, our role as Christians is to continue shining the light of truth and living out our faith with integrity, joy, and humility. Even as we face hardship, we are called to rejoice, knowing that our labor in the Lord is not in vain.
This passage reminds us that, even though we are living in a generation that may seem lost, we have the privilege and responsibility to live as children of God and be a witness to His grace and truth in a dark world.
