In Matthew 7:12 (NLT), Jesus sums up the essence of the Law and the Prophets: “Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you.” This principle embodies all the teachings of the law. Under the Old Covenant, keeping rules like the 603 commandments was impossible to fully achieve moral perfection. However, with the New Covenant, we receive the Holy Spirit, who empowers us to live out this morality by grace rather than rule-keeping.

True spiritual maturity is shown when you treat others with grace, even when they hurt you. The Holy Spirit works within you, helping you rise above pain, fear of rejection, and selfishness. By showing grace—just as God extended His grace to us—we grow spiritually. This growth doesn’t come from following rules or condemning others. Instead, it stems from living by the essence of God’s law, which is love and grace.

Remember, the Pharisee was legalistic in his faith, boasting about fasting and tithing, but his heart was far from God. On the other hand, the humble tax collector, aware of his sins, was justified. Let’s strive to have hearts close to God, living by grace and love, not by legalism.
