Let’s Talk About What’s REALLY Going On Here | Kirk Cameron on TBN

How Can We Pray For You? Have you signed up yet?

Americans often claim to believe in God—but only if they can define who that God is. As I emphasize in my book, many times, people make themselves their own god. This shift has led to a culture that abandons transcendent truth, and the consequences are profound.

Joining us today is Dr. Erwin Lutzer, Pastor Emeritus of The Moody Church in Chicago, where he served as Senior Pastor for 36 years. He is the author of several books, including The Eclipse of God, which we’ll be discussing today.

What Does It Mean That God Has Been “Eclipsed”?

Think of a solar eclipse—the moon blocks the sun’s light from reaching the earth, but the sun itself remains as bright as ever. Similarly, I argue in my book that secularism has become the “moon” that blocks society from seeing God, though He remains unchanged.

This concept is reflected in Isaiah 59:1-2, where God says, “It is not that my ear is deaf or my arm too short to save, but your iniquities have separated you from me, and I have hidden my face from you.” This is the essence of the eclipse of God. As belief in Him diminishes, we descend into deeper darkness.

The Danger of a Self-Made God

Many Americans say, “I’m spiritual; I believe in God,” yet they are not referring to the God of Scripture. Instead, they shape a god that aligns with their desires.

For example, The Economist once published an article claiming that God has become more “liberal” and now approves of same-sex marriage. The online version was titled “Nearer My God to Me.” In other words, rather than praying, “Your will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven,” many now prefer, “Your will be done in Heaven as we do on Earth.”

This is idolatry. People claim spirituality but reject doctrine, creating a “god” who reflects their own consciousness rather than the true, sovereign Creator. Isaiah 29:8 illustrates this well: “A hungry man dreams he is eating but wakes up still hungry; a thirsty man dreams he is drinking but wakes up still parched.” False religion offers temporary comfort but no true fulfillment.

Who Will Take Away Your Sin?

One of the most important questions we can ask is: Is the god you believe in capable of forgiving your sins? Many modern spiritual beliefs promote a god who exists to help but not to redeem—because people no longer see a need for redemption.

John Calvin once said, “The human mind is an idol factory,” constantly creating false images of God. These self-made gods may provide temporary reassurance, but ultimately, they lead to destruction.

Why Getting Back to the True God Matters

For those committed to Scripture, returning to the true God is essential. But for those who say, “What’s the big deal? I like the god I’ve created,” the answer is simple:

All false gods fall short.

In my book, I share an illustration from my only experience golfing. Near a pond, I saw a duck take flight. This moment reminded me how fleeting human ideas of God can be—here one moment, gone the next. Only the true God, revealed in Scripture, remains steadfast.
