The Foolishness of the Wise & Wise Fools | Jonathan Cahn Sermon

How Can We Pray For You? Have you signed up yet?

Many people today seek wisdom through science, philosophy, and ancient traditions. Some scientists claim that the universe began with a Big Bang. If it had a start, what caused that start? How could nothingness bring forth everything? Without God, even scientific reasoning self-destructs. True wisdom, however, comes from understanding that creation points back to its Creator.

In this message, we explore the concept of divine wisdom revealed to the humble, as illustrated in Psalm 8 and confirmed by the words of Jesus in Matthew 11.

Psalm 8: The Majesty of God’s Name

Psalm 8 opens with a powerful declaration:

From the mouths of infants and babes, God has established strength to silence His enemies. The original Hebrew word for “infants” is “ol”, referring to nursing infants. This image of vulnerability and innocence holds profound spiritual truths that we often overlook.

Divine Wisdom Revealed to the Humble

Jesus Himself affirmed this idea in Matthew 11:25:

The term “little children” echoes the Hebrew word “olim” from Psalm 8. Why does God reveal His truths to the humble and not to those considered wise by worldly standards? The answer lies in the nature of divine wisdom versus human wisdom.

The Limitations of Human Wisdom

Philosophers throughout history, from ancient Greece to modern times, have debated the meaning of life and the nature of truth. Yet, their conclusions often contradict each other. For example:

  • One philosopher claims the ultimate truth is found in reason.
  • Another argues that truth is subjective.

Similarly, in Jewish tradition, rabbis have debated interpretations of the Torah. The Talmud, a vast collection of rabbinical writings, contains countless opinions on the same topics, often without a clear resolution. The result? Endless debate without ultimate truth.

Science, too, falls short. The word “science” comes from the Latin root meaning “to know.” Scientists possess knowledge, but knowledge alone does not equate to wisdom. Some scientists argue that the universe has always existed. Others propose that it had a definite beginning. Yet, if the universe began with a Big Bang, what caused that event? How can something arise from nothing?

Without acknowledging God, human wisdom collapses under its own contradictions.

The Superiority of Divine Wisdom

In contrast to human wisdom, divine wisdom is simple yet profound. It is accessible to those with childlike faith—the humble, the pure-hearted, and the spiritually receptive. Jesus highlights this truth:

This divine wisdom isn’t about acquiring more knowledge but about receiving God’s revelation with an open heart.

Lessons from the East: The Limits of Eastern Philosophy

Eastern philosophies and New Age teachings often claim that individuals are divine beings who have forgotten their true nature. However, these teachings fall short of providing a coherent understanding of the Creator and His purpose for humanity. Instead of pointing to a personal, loving God, they promote self-deification.

True wisdom acknowledges that we are created beings, dependent on our Creator. It recognizes that we need divine guidance and revelation to understand life’s deeper truths.

Entering the Blessings of a Heavenly Life

Psalm 8 and Matthew 11 teach us a vital spiritual principle: humility opens the door to divine revelation. When we approach God with the simplicity and trust of a child, we position ourselves to receive His blessings and wisdom.

Practical Steps to Embrace Divine Wisdom

  1. Cultivate Humility: Recognize that human knowledge has limitations. Approach God with a humble heart, acknowledging your need for His guidance.
  2. Embrace Childlike Faith: Trust in God’s goodness and His promises, just as a child trusts a loving parent.
  3. Seek God’s Revelation: Spend time in prayer and study of Scripture. Ask God to reveal His truths to you.
  4. Reject Worldly Wisdom: Be cautious of philosophies and teachings that contradict God’s Word. Instead, anchor yourself in biblical truth.

Final Reflection

True wisdom comes from God. It is revealed to those who are humble and receptive. As we learn from Psalm 8 and Matthew 11, God delights in revealing His mysteries to the childlike. Let us seek to cultivate a heart of humility and faith, trusting that God will lead us into His heavenly wisdom.
