The Message: Reaching the Unknown God
Every religion represents humanity reaching upward trying to find God or truth.
Some believe that through good works they can attain a better future. Others seek enlightenment, unity with the divine, or entrance into paradise through religious law. Across cultures and beliefs, there is a common thread: the human hand reaching toward heaven.
But the Gospel is radically different.
It is not about humanity reaching God it is about God reaching down to humanity.
Even believers sometimes miss this truth, turning faith into effort instead of receiving grace. But salvation begins with God’s initiative, not ours.
A powerful question to ask anyone is this: Which is greater what you know, or what you don’t know?
If someone answers honestly, they will admit that what they don’t know is far greater. And if that’s true, then the heart must remain open especially toward God, who is beyond all human understanding.
The unknown is greater than the known and God is greater than anything we can comprehend.
Paul’s Strategy: Building Bridges, Not Barriers
When the apostle Paul encountered people far from God, he didn’t begin with condemnation. Instead, he looked for connection.
He met people where they were. He spoke their language. He understood their culture. He searched for a point of agreement a bridge.
In Athens, he found that bridge in the altar dedicated “to the unknown god.”
From that starting point, he revealed the truth.
This is the same approach we are called to take today.
Finding the “Altar” in Every Heart
No matter who someone is religious, atheist, skeptical, or even hostile there is always an “altar” within them. A place of longing. A spiritual hunger. A space shaped for God.
People may not know His name, but the desire is there.
Missionaries around the world have discovered this truth repeatedly. Even in cultures untouched by the Gospel, people often express a deep awareness of separation from God and a hope that one day, truth would be revealed to them.
That is your calling: find the altar, find the connection, and build the bridge.
A Personal Encounter in Nigeria
There was a moment when I experienced this reality firsthand.
While in Nigeria, I was sitting in a car when suddenly a group of Muslim men surrounded me. They looked at me and asked, “Are you a Hebrew?”
I said yes.
Then they asked, “What do you think about Islam?”
In that moment knowing it could cost me everything I responded:
“Islam acknowledges that Jesus is the Messiah. And if He is the Messiah and is coming again, then you must listen to what He said that He is the way, the truth, and the life, and that no one comes to salvation except through Him.”
It was a bold moment. I didn’t know what would happen next.
But instead of anger, something unexpected happened.
As we began to leave, they stopped the car and said, “Don’t go give us a blessing.”
They bowed their heads, and I prayed over them that they would come to know the Lord.
Even there, in that moment, there was an altar a connection.
Living as Messengers of the Unknown God
The world does not truly know God.
And that is why you are called to reveal Him.
But here’s the key: people won’t just hear the message they need to see something different.
If you live like everyone else holding grudges, complaining, living in fear there is nothing new to show them.
But when you love your enemies…
When you forgive instead of resent…
When you choose joy instead of bitterness…
When you walk in peace instead of anxiety…
That’s when people begin to see something they’ve never seen before.
That’s when they encounter the reality of God.
