Pastor Rick Warren : This Message will Change Your Life
Have you ever wished you could hit a reset button on your life? Maybe you feel weighed down by past mistakes, old habits, or a sense that you’ve lost your way. The good news is, you’re not alone—and there is real hope for a brand-new beginning. Let’s explore together how you can embrace a fresh start through faith, and discover four practical steps to prepare your heart for true transformation. Whether you’re a lifelong Christian or just starting to explore spiritual things, these Biblical principles can help you reset your life and find the freedom God longs to give you.
The Power of a Life “Reset”—Why Jesus Came
If you’ve ever had your computer freeze up from too many programs running, you know the panic of losing your work. There comes a point when the only option is to reboot the system. In many ways, our lives can get just as cluttered and overwhelmed, leaving us spiritually stuck and emotionally drained. That’s exactly why Jesus came—to offer us a way to reset, restoring what’s broken and giving us a fresh start.
Over the years, churches like Saddleback have made it clear what really matters: changed lives. This isn’t about performances, large buildings, or even sermons; it’s about lives radically transformed by God’s grace. When someone turns their life around, overcomes addiction, rebuilds their family, or discovers hope for the first time, that is the real “win” for the church and the heartbeat of Jesus’ message.
Transformation Has Many Names, But One Source
The Bible uses several terms for this process: salvation, conversion, sanctification, being born again, or simply “starting over.” All of them point to the profound reset God offers through Christ. Multitudes have experienced it, and if you follow Jesus, you probably have your own story to tell. You may not be perfect, but you know the direction of your life has changed because of His love.
From Curiosity to Life Change: How a New Beginning Starts
Sometimes a single experience reveals what’s been missing. One visitor recently shared how they’d attended church for the first time, drawn in by the smiles and warmth of people they didn’t even know. As the congregation sang with heartfelt passion, tears came—because God’s presence was unmistakable. You may not even know the songs, but when you see real faith in action, it’s powerful. That moment, hearing about God’s love and purpose, sparked something new—a reset in their life direction.
That story can be yours, too. God wants to offer you a fresh start—no matter what your past looks like.
Resetting Your Life—The Biblical Promise
The Bible is clear: Jesus is the source of truth (Ephesians 4:22-24). When you follow Him, you “put off” your old self—outdated habits, thinking patterns, regrets—and “put on” a new self, created to reflect God’s goodness. Just like changing old clothes for new ones, transformation is a process. But you don’t have to do it alone or in your own strength. God specializes in making all things new!
But real change doesn’t happen by accident. There are some practical steps you can take to open yourself to God’s renewing work. Let’s walk through the four foundational preparations for a true life reset:
Step 1: Ask God to Do Something New in You
The journey to reset your life starts with a heartfelt prayer. Don’t just ask once—be persistent! The more you communicate your desire for change, the more you show God (and yourself) that you’re serious. God loves it when we boldly ask Him to transform us and do something fresh.
Jesus described Himself as the one who “makes all things new” (Revelation 21). If you’re tired of your old ways, He’s ready to help. One powerful example from Scripture is King David, who prayed, “God, make a fresh start in me. Shape a Genesis week from the chaos of my life” (Psalm 51:10, paraphrased). David cried out for a new heart after some of the worst decisions of his life. No matter what you have done, you’re never too far gone for God’s forgiveness. His grace covers every failure.
The message is clear: your past may have shaped you, but it doesn’t have to imprison you. No matter how many mistakes you’ve made, God invites you to a second (or third, or hundredth) chance. “Forget the former things,” the Lord says. “Look at the new things I am doing—they are already beginning to happen!” (Isaiah 43:18-19).
So, the first preparation is simple but profound: honestly pray, “God, I need a fresh start. Please do something new in my life.”
Step 2: Get Specific About What Needs to Change
General prayers like “God, change me” are a start, but transformation happens when you’re specific. Think about it: you can’t fix a problem you haven’t identified, and you can’t grow unless you know what needs to be different. Take time for real self-examination. Ask yourself:
- Where do I need a spiritual reset—have I ever been closer to God than I am right now?
- Do I need healing or improvement in my physical health?
- Are my priorities in order, or do I spend time on things that don’t truly matter?
- Is there a relationship—friendship, family, marriage—that needs a reset?
- Am I struggling in my career, habits, marriage, or even my thought life?
- Do I need to reevaluate my routines, parenting, schedule, or self-confidence?
- Am I facing financial challenges or struggling to pursue my dreams?
The more honest you are, the easier it is for God to do the deep (and lasting)
