How To Use Heaven’s GPS | Jonathan Cahn Sermon
Are you feeling a little lost on your spiritual journey? Maybe life’s path has become unclear, or you sense you’ve drifted from where God wants you to be. Well, the good news is God has given us everything we need to find our way—His Word is our ultimate guide. Let’s explore how to use “Heaven’s GPS” to navigate life, set up spiritual safeguards, and return to our God-given destiny, no matter how far off track we’ve gone.
Setting Up Spiritual Guideposts
Every journey needs roadmarks and guideposts. In the Bible, God tells His people to “set up for yourselves roadmarks, guideposts.” What does this mean for us? It means establishing clear spiritual markers so you always know you’re on course. Think of these as spiritual boundaries—reminders that help keep your life aligned with God’s best for you.
Just like highways have guardrails to protect travelers from danger, we need “hedges” in our spiritual lives. These are personal boundaries that keep us from slipping into old sins or temptations. Maybe you know you struggle with a certain temptation, so you put distance between yourself and that situation. Or you set limits on the media you consume, the company you keep, or the environments you enter. These aren’t about legalism—they’re about wisdom and protection.
The Power of Spiritual Hedges
Many resist the idea of boundaries, thinking, “Aren’t we free in Christ?” True, but freedom thrives within God’s design. Hedges might not feel necessary every moment, but the one time you need them, they can protect your heart, your marriage, your ministry—your very walk with God. They’re there for the moments of weakness, not the times of strength.
Consider a story from ministry life—a leader sets boundaries that prevent potentially compromising situations, even if they seem innocent on the surface. When the moment of testing comes, those hedges are already in place. The Bible says “flee youthful lusts” (2 Timothy 2:22). It’s far wiser to avoid the edge than try to talk yourself out of a fall on the way down. Boundaries aren’t just about avoiding sin; they’re about pursuing holiness proactively.
Correction Starts with Humility
We all know the feeling of being physically lost—pulling into a random driveway and pretending you know where you’re going, all while your passengers are quietly skeptical. But it’s much harder to admit you’re lost spiritually, even to yourself. The first step to getting back on track is humility before God—an honest confession that you’ve wandered from the path.
The Bible is clear: “If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven…” (2 Chronicles 7:14). Confession isn’t about shame; it’s an opportunity for freedom. God can only heal what we acknowledge. If we keep defending ourselves, we remain stuck in the very things that hold us back. But repentance opens the door for healing and restoration.
Getting Back to God’s Highway
Every believer faces detours. Maybe you realize you used to be passionate in prayer or Scripture, but somewhere along the line, your fire faded. The key is to ask God, “When did I take a wrong turn?” Pinpoint where you lost momentum and resolve to get back to the life you’re called to.
Jesus warned, “If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit” (Matthew 15:14). In other words, be careful who and what you follow—don’t rationalize God’s truth to suit your desires. Many try to tweak God’s boundaries when they want something badly enough. The real test of faith isn’t following God when it’s easy—it’s obeying Him when it’s hard, when it conflicts with your wants.
Don’t Be Your Own Worst Deceiver
The human heart is an excellent self-deceiver. We justify, rationalize, and excuse ourselves all the time. But God’s foundational instructions are simple—even a child can understand His core truths. The stumbling block isn’t intelligence; it’s humility and willingness. Stay close to the plain truths of God before chasing after new trends or “movements” that promise something new but pull you from what the Word clearly says.
Let God’s Word Be Your GPS
Scripture describes itself as a “lamp to our feet” (Psalm 119:105)—our spiritual GPS. The Bible keeps us oriented on course. Treasure it. Cling to it. No revelation, teaching, person, or feeling should distract you from the clear direction found in His Word.
Remember, you are personally accountable for how you walk out your faith. Not your pastor, not your spouse, not even respected spiritual leaders—just you and God. No matter how influential a leader may be, your journey is yours alone before the Lord. That’s why it is vital to always compare every new idea or movement with Scripture, like the Bereans did in Acts 17:11.
What To Do When You’ve Gone Off Course
Maybe you find yourself off track—not as passionate as you once were, or maybe you’ve experienced a real fall. Take these powerful steps:
- Decide now to get back.
- Determine to return to the last place you knew you were on track—your “highway.”
- Acknowledge and repent of the wrong turn—but don’t dwell on it; give it to God and move forward.
- Direct your mind—focus on the path God set before you, not on the side road or failure that took you off.
Most of our journey with God is supposed to be on the main highway, the broad, God-appointed road that leads toward our calling. When you go off track
