Title: Breaking Free From the Chains of Your Past | Jonathan Cahn Message

The Spirit of God carries a power unlike anything else—the power to break the natural law of cause and effect. In this world, your past often dictates your present and seems to determine your future. But in Christ, the resurrection power of the Spirit gives you the authority to break free and become something new.

Last week we celebrated the resurrection. But it’s not enough to celebrate it—we are called to live it. Messiah rose on the Feast of First Fruits, the day when the first offering of the harvest was lifted before the Lord. That first sheaf represented the entire harvest. In the same way, His resurrection was not just an event; it was the first fruits of what is meant to happen in our lives. He rose so that we could walk in resurrection power every day.

That power was revealed again at Pentecost, when the Spirit descended. The same Spirit that raised Messiah from the tomb is now given to us. It is the Spirit of resurrection. Just as He broke through the grave, He breaks through the chains of sin, guilt, shame, and condemnation in our lives. By that power, your past no longer defines your future.

Think of Paul. His past was one of anger, violence, and persecution. By natural cause and effect, that should have been his destiny. But when the resurrection power touched him, he became an apostle of love and grace. The disciples should have remained unknown fishermen, broken by the death of their rabbi. Yet, when the Spirit came, they became pillars of the faith, turning the world upside down.

The Spirit is not about carrying your old baggage into a new life. It is about cutting it off. Messiah broke the law of sin and death. He destroyed the momentum of sin, hate, and failure. Habits that seem unbreakable can be broken by His Spirit. What once had power over you no longer has to control you.

At the cross, He bore not only sin but also guilt, shame, regret, and condemnation. The resurrection proclaims that all of it has been finished. The wrappings of the old life—the grave clothes—have no place on you anymore. The Spirit empowers you to take them off and step into your true identity in Christ.

This is the call of resurrection: to put away every dead thing—anger, bitterness, addictions, lies, destructive habits—and to walk in newness of life. By the Spirit, you are no longer bound to what was. You are called to what is alive, holy, and eternal.

The past does not own you. The Spirit of God has given you the power to live free, to cast off the dead, and to rise with Messiah into a life of victory.
